Its def a good idea to get the tool but if you cant and need to do whatever it is your doing now there is a way...there are 4 screws that you can find by removing the plastic pieces above and below the stereo, they are very small but after you remove them you can pull the entire thing out and get to the back of your stereo that way. This is how i did it when i put in an iPod adapter and worked fine

make the tools out of credit cards or pendaflex hanging folder rods

Those are the ford removal tools. Oreillys doesn't carry them from what I have seen. Ebay has them cheap though.

get an old credit card and cut it into strips. put the strips in the slots on the radio. it will unlock the stereo from the cage and you can pull out the radio.

      very simple.

you sure you got every screw? i just know there is a couple that are hiding pretty good. i think there is 3 on each side of the cage.

I hate to bring this thread back from the dead but I am recently trying to get my radio out after I picked up my car this past summer and I ordered the keys off ebay but when I stick them in the slots they don't click in all the time and when I try and pull back once they are in they immediately release and won't pull the radio out any. I have a Monsoon double din radio, so I am not sure if the plastic pieces above and below can be removed like it was discussed in the above post or not. I am assuming the previous owner tried to used home-made keys and damaged the release tabs so now they won't work properly. If anyone has any other suggestions it'd be greatly appreciated.

well, the way i went about doing it was there is four very small screws on the top and bottom. take them out and the whole front face comes off. use something like a tooth pick or something to pull in all four tabs. headunit slides out.
