that happened on my mkiv because the steering wheel locked up, i just wiggled the steering wheel and tried to put it in drive at the same time and it worked

It might be a brake light switch failure
on a automatic it won't allow the tranny to go into gear

      Back to the MKIV days

Can you guys tell me where the brake light switch is located? The steering wheel moves free and all the brake lights work when the car is started. The brakes dont work however when the key is not in the ignition.

Try rocking the car a bit, my wife recently did this to my gli, when she parked on a hill, she let the car roll forward before applying the e-brake.

the switch is located just above the brake pedal. You have to look just above the pedal assembly and you'll see something like what's depicted here. That pic is for a MkIV, but it's basically a similar looking part.

ill check that out. Would the brake light switch cause the shift pattern to not show up on the dash? The PRND is not displayed on the dash under the miles like it use to be before the problem.

Check fuses #30 (20A) and #14 (10A) on the fuse panel on the left side of the dashboard.
