Spotted at the new "california-based" grocery store near my house...Seriously? Seriously? Do the hybrid people need to feel more special and smug than some of them already do? Now they get select parking as well? Yeah for exotic battery packs with lots of bad stuff in them!
I think I will park here the next time I shop there.

I'd pull up and plant our '97 Suburban right there every time. Who's smug now?

It's a way to earn points for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation. I believe the intent is to motivate people to buy more fuel efficient cars.I prefer some of the other LEED criteria for parking points that give you a bonus in renovations for decreasing the existing number of spots to promote public transportation.

There's a shopping center not far from my house that has "hybrid" and "alt-fuel" parking spots. I park my Vibe in them all the time. One time I parked, got out, and some lady got all uppity - as a certain type of woman in this town does professionally. "Is that a hybrid? You're not allowed to park there."So I gave her a fine smile and said, "Why, yes. It's a hybrid. Special edition. You can tell because it's green."
She smiled back. "Oh, really? I never knew that. What kind of gas mileage do you get."
"Oh, 60 or so highway."
Her face falls. "Oh. I only get 45 in my Prius."
"I'm sorry."

Seriously? Seriously? Do the hybrid people need to feel more special and smug than some of them already do?Yes, clearly, "hybrid people" are responsible for this. Didn't you know you got a couple of big-assed stencils when you buy a prius, and a license to spray paint this message on whatever parking stall you want, and you can also spray paint the "HOV lane for solo hybrid drivers" on any HOV lane signs you see.
sheesh.

Also, these are not "legal" spots, right? (I can't imagine they are.) So if I park there the parking Nazis can't ticket me or something stupid right?

Obviously hybrid drivers as a group are not, but it certainly perpetuates their smugness.

Exactly, hybrid doesn't automatically = fuel efficient. They'll see Escalade Hybrids and GS450h's parking there and wonder why they ever did that.

Given the shortage of lithium we'll be facing relatively soon, there's almost no scenario I can think of in which a hybrid battery wouldn't be recycled...the contents are simply far too valuable to waste.

FWIW, the certification that these grocery stores have that requires these hybrid spots, also requires bike racks.

So this must part of a LEED certification, then. It just makes me wonder what the motivation is to providing more parking convenience to consumers who chose to purchase a car that is more fuel-efficient in city driving.
IIRC, LEED also offers points for fewer parking spaces, and more access for bicycles and public transportation. I think the "Hybrids Only" idea is a step in the wrong direction. It seems like no one on the LEED committee really thought this one through....

Yeah, duh - obviously the intent is to recycle the batteries. But stating that wouldn't help me to rabble rabble up the masses now would it?

The intent was to bash the enabling of smugness amongst certain hybrid drivers. God forbid we introduce logic into this!
