That's certainly not how it works here, and I'm fairly positive that's not actually how it works in CA either... The hull is considered the pre-ban component of consequence. You can't just throw an old follower in a brand new mag and call it a day.

To answer your first question, an undated/stamped hull is generally enough proof of age (there are some new mags that are undated, but in most cases they are from manufacturers that weren't active before the ban). There are dated pre-ban hulls out there and those fetch a premium in NY since their legitimacy is assured.




With a few county exceptions, there's no class required for obtaining a permit. And I'm almost entirely positive no place in NY requires a shooting qualification, seeing as how you need the permit to own a pistol in the first place. It's not like other states were you buy with a background check, then get a CCW later.

In California to be legal, you can replace any part or combination of parts, as long as you do not wind up with more magazines than you started with.

That sounds absolutely terrifying. Not sure how you could ever call any other laws 'voodoo' after explaining that hot mess. As crappy as NY's laws are, at least there's something tangible we can point to on our mags. No proof, just your word against a LEO that your mags are legit? Burden of proof is theirs. good luck proving I didnt have the magazine prior to Jan 1 2000. There is no possible way. Not that I'm saying to do anything illegal, just saying that I owned full caps before the ban and they have been rebuilt with Magpul bodies and its totally legal. Yeah our laws are total VooDoo!!! Well, if you're allowed to own them, why is this even a discussion. Its not hard to find mags, order them from any of a thousand places and just have them delivered.

You made it sound like you needed to find pre-ban stuff. For that the answer is a real AR10 that doesnt have an issue with pre-ban mags.

If you can own post ban, then just get them.

I go through 44mag.com and CALegalMags.com and SolarTactical and Exile Machine for rebuild kits. I'm not sure about NY and if they have to be dated before a certain date for standard capacity to be used or what, but rebuild kits and mag blocks are the way to go in CA. Best of luck.

F*** CTD. I'd rather pay more from MidwayUSA as they actually take the time to understand the laws in CA and still provide a great service. Reading their paper reloading special right now at work. Even, Brownells does a great job at it; CTD can piss off.

44mag.com will ship anything to NY as a rebuild kit regardless of your ability to possess, without question.

If you can legitimately own a P-Mag (puddin), I would get them shipped here disassembled but complete from them.

I picked up some permanently pinned pmags from a company in California a little while ago. Got a few 20s and one 30. Don't really use the 30 since it only holds 10 and the extra length is useless but I wanted a 30 just for looks. The pinned 20s are perfect because you can still shoot from the bench but you actually have something to grab as opposed to the tiny steel ten rounders that shipped with my gun.

I think a simple Service-Rifle style would be the only way I'd have an AR, which, as much as I've never been interested in building one, seems all the more likely now that Fineswine is running for re-election and it is an election year in general. I purchased my first firearm during the '08 election cycle... Yeeesh... Also, those Armalite .308 rifles that are 20" and have the fixed or M4 stock, I covet one of those dearly...

I'll shoot Appleseed first with my Marlin 795 and after I make Rifleman, then I'll try the K31; match-quality milsurp should help a bit.

Picked up a Jericho 914, or baby eagle a couple months ago. I really enjoy shooting it more than I thought. I thought my 1911 would be the only gun I like....
