Not that you'll check H&F before you lift tomorrow, but good luck. I'm rooting for an epic total.

I ain't gonna lie, I kicked some ass today. Made weight at 99.9.

      Squat-408/440/473 all good and deep.

Bench- 275/303/313 left some on the platform but wanted to conserve energy for DL.

DL- I signed up for DL only as well as full power because there's a guy that always does DL only but never has any competition. Went 501/551, he went 523/551 so I needed my last one because he weighed less than me. He missed 562 and I got 573 for a 22lb PR.

So, ended up 9/9 for 473.7/314/573 and a 1360.7 total which is a 75.7lb PR.

The whole team kicked ass, with five golds between the five of us and multiple PRs.

Well done! Is that an elite total at that weight class?

Pretty sad I haven't done a meet in a year and haven't gone up all that much since I've been doing this, but I finally have a meet on 12/3.

Plan is Squat 485/501/523, Bench 297/313/330, DL ? (testing tomorrow).
It's all about squats and deads.

Welp, didn't all go as planned.

Weighed in at 100.8 kilos, which is fine because I don't care at a local meet. But, I now wish I would have eaten more at Thanksgiving.

      Squat:
485- Stalled halfway up from form issues, way tougher than an opener should be.
501- Grinder which blew out capillaries in my eyelids and shoulders, but got it.
523- No lift. Lighter opener and I think I would have had a better shot at this.

      Bench:
      297- Easy.
      313- Fairly quick.
325- No lift. I think my bench is affected by my confidence. Mental game for me because I ****ing hate bench press. 7x5x275? No problem. 325x1? Can't do it.

      DL:
507- I could really do this with one leg, but haven't pulled heavy that much lately so I wasn't sure where to start.
535- Slowed down halfway up but once it gets past my knees they all come up. Then, for some reason that escapes me, my left foot stepped back. Never done this in my life. No lift.
535- I was ****ing pissed off and smoked it. Probably should have done 551 but I wasn't calling my attempts.

1350 total. Down from last year because of the DL. Also made me lose the best Wilks total for the team. Frustrated but have a meet the last weekend in February and will be able to hit the goals I had for this meet. Need to fix a couple little things with my squat form to get better elbow drive, and am going to really work to bring my bench up.

Keep your head up though and hopefully you had some fun. Maybe work in more 90% stuff with your next peak? I think you just need to overload the bench on two boards, 3 boards, and reverse bands to be honest. Get some heavy weight in your hands.

      Eat up

I'll be a 220 for this. Was going to try to get down to 198 but would rather just go in strong and mid-weight class rather than have to water cut before my first national meet. 215 right now. Will be 198 in December.

Well, I can't just post when things go well, now can I?

Flew down to Austin Friday, drove up to Killeen, got checked in, weighed 99.8kg. Nice.

      Meet Day
Officially weigh in at 97.5kg, which is the lightest I've ever been for a meet and wasn't a result of water cutting.

My training leading up to this meet was going really well up until three weeks out where everything kind of fell apart. Lots of squatting, but didn't pull over 500 due to not wanting to hurt myself before my first National. Bad idea when looking back on what I did wrong.

      SQUAT
      451- Clean
      473- Slower but good
      501- got 1/2 way up

      BENCH
      303- Flew up
      319- Fairly easy
      330- Again, about halfway up

At this point I'm pretty defeated mentally. I didn't know a single person there, and I knew that I wasn't going to get 501/330 and thus didn't.

Back was tightening up so the thought of bombing crept in.

      DL
      496- Fairly simple
512- Didn't move more than six inches
512- Didn't come off the floor.

At this point in time I was the most defeated I have ever been as a lifter. By myself, and four months of hard work didn't produce anything close to my goals. I have never pulled less than 520 in a meet before.

Overall I'm glad I went and will again next year. Watching some of the amazing lifters in the flesh was a cool experience, and I learned something about myself and how I need to train.

Cutting to 200 for the new 93kg class next year, and changing up how I train. Onward and upward.

If I could hammer my squat like you i would have my 1500 already

      Good job thou !

    18. 08-23-2012 05:01 AM #263
Switched back to a 5x5 for the next four weeks. Thie setup also has me doing squats three days a week, which is nice. I forgot how sore a 5x5 makes you compared to a 3x3. Still on course to hitting my goals at the end of the year.

This thread is like a time capsule.

Did a meet in December, bench only.

303 fault due to picking up head
319 fault due to picking up head
      319 smoked

      Probably had 345ish in me

Down to 205 and dropping. 185 would be nice.

The days of heavy SQUATting are probably behind me, but I've started running a bit and enjoy the new challenge.

Hah. I'm also making the transition to bench only. I guess that's going around nowadays.

I think inevitably you burn out or your injuries burn you out, and it's good to change gears and do new things. We're not professionals, so we might as well have fun.

I got tired of feeling like I got hit by a truck all the time. Plus, the margin of error is so freaking slim once you get about 500 pounds.

You're totally right about having fun. Love what I'm doing now.

I've brought this up before. What happens when the quantity of time and effort it takes to continue to improve becomes too much? Gains aren't linear. Things have slowed down for me the last few years. Now I'm struggling with injury and wondering when I'll be able to come back.

      Do you start bodybuilding?

I know that is tongue in cheek, but I think it depends on if you want to continue being a gym rat. BB would be a natural direction I would think. For me, I just focus more on gym training to help me stay healthy and strong in my other interests.

My days of training and prepping for a max lift are done. It took way too much time, was detrimental to my activities outside of the gym, and really only served an ego boosting purpose so I could associate a lift with a number.

You guys nailed it. As you get closer to your body's max potential, the time commitment increases. If I really wanted to keep getting stronger, I'd have to go lift with my team which is an hour away from me. I have two kids now. My priorities changed. While I'll never compete in bodybuilding, I've never been more focused on aesthetics than I am right now. It's a new challenge, and it keeps the gym fun. I still plan on hitting a 365 bench this year, but heavy SQUATting goes directly against my running goals.

What are your running goals, are you looking to do half marathons+?

Just curious because I hear it a lot and I still squat for reps in the 400s and run 3-4 miles every morning and do a few 10ks with my runner friends. I know that amount isn't considered "running" to a lot of the guys I know logging crazy mileage, but it's possible to do both to a certain point.

I'm gonna do two marathons, two weeks apart, and then maybe train for a triathlon.

Full disclosure: one of my knees is kinda screwed up, and gets painful around parallel when SQUATting.

      Wow, he's back. Welcome!

The Grand Rapids, Michigan APA meet was last weekend. The last flight ended a little after 11pm. I really want to do a full "real" meat some day, but I simply cannot justify 7am-11pm on a Saturday, not including the commute. F--- that. Then the nagging shoulder, knee, and hip issues don't help. But now that I train at home, I simply cannot let it go.

I look forward to hearing where this new direction takes you. Best of luck.

Oh yeah, you are a runner. I can see the issue with the squats. Getting the biking in for the tri will be good for helping strength with the amount of running that will accompany.

11 PM?!?!?! That is a horribly run meet. We put the one on I did in December. Two platforms, 80 lifters, we were cleaned up and done by 4 I think. Oh, and I'm a USAPL judge now. My how times have changed.

It'll be a Sprint, and I'm not looking to break any records, just want to do something different.
