Cluches for our cars are so much more expensive that the ones for the 5speed 1.8t...
#39
Be glad it's a 6 speed and a much better gearbox. The 240MM sized parts VS. 228MM are going to cost more. For example the 02A/02J 5 speed release bearing sells for 3-4x less than the cost of the 02M 6 speed one ( $24.95 vs $89.95). 240MM Flywheels also cost $175 more than the billet 228mm 5 speed ones.

Got my 1+ installed a week ago. Great engagement. Some chatter, but that was expected.
I'm gonna go BT in a couple months. (300hp) Will this kit hold up for a while or will I HAVE to buy a new clutch?

Quote, originally posted by FourSeasonTuning.com » The dish and offset of the 5 speed and 6 speeds flywheels are different and do not interchange. The only mfg that uses a VR6 pressure plate for A 6 speed 02M application is Eurospec Sport. The kit uses a 228MM 11 pound custom cast steel flywheel and a modified (for extra clamping force) VR6 pressure plate . It uses a stock Sachs 228mm full face disc w/ 23 spline center (from Audi 80) as opposed to the 28 spline for the 5 speed cars. We have had Clutchnet make us other discs for this application that would be stronger than the OE disc supplied in the ESS kit. ARP bolts are supplied with the ESS kits.
If you don't mind a little noise at idle then one of the ESS kits will be better on your budget.
I'm confused, in your OP the ESS kits don't come with 11 pound flywheels.
![]()
Also I have a few other questions.
1) In the stage 1 kits, the Sachs is cheaper than the LUK. But in the stage 1+ kits, everything is the same except for the pressure plate, and the one including a Sachs cost more.
2) Will a higher clamping force pressure plate cause a slave cyl. to fail any faster?
Looks like I'm just trying to decide between the State 1+ and the ESS 240mm kit, based upon chatter. Also how do the discs in those two kits compare? Is the ESS disc closer to the OE one or the Clutchnet one?
Thanks!
John

The ESS kits were revised and now have 20 and 26 pound FW options. We get a better deal on the Sachs Kits Vs the LUK.
The stage 2-3+ are made to work with the OE release bearing.
Have not heard the Noise from a 20 or 26 pound ESS kit.
The stage 1+ has a fully covered steel sprung hub disc, so this would be better than the un-sprung oe disc or the ESS type when using a single mass flywheel. The Noise varies from car to car. The heavier steel flywheel makes less noise than the sub 11 pound types ( the most noise is at idle with clutch pedal out).

The solid hub disc's are used with dual mass flywheel from the factory, the disc material is riveted/bonded to a segmented steel material ( where the sprung hub below has a larger steel backing more surface material for the friction material to bond to). This solid type is the OEM disc from your car.
Sprung Hub steel backed disc's were designed for maximum burst and rotational strength. The sprung hub's six springs lessen shock of engagement, Sprung hub discs (similar design) are also used on the Audi S4/RS4 (2000-2004 era) also 240MM and a 6 spring hub, even with a dual mass flywheel. The RS4 with a factory modified LUK pressure plate and stock S4/RS4 sprung hub disc was rated for 380HP. The sprung hub disc is also used from the factory on almost all single mass clutch setups. The most used street type disc is a sprung hub for daily driving. The Clutchnet disc has fully covered the springs for extra strength.

I have the 1+ kit. It seems like the engagement is a lot higher up in the pedal's travel. Is this normal?
Not good for me. 6' tall and having to high step sucks.![]()
Great product though.

The pedal travel should be similar to stock. Both the alloy and steel flywheel's have the same step height as the OE flywheel and are compatible with the OE clutch kit. A few users have diagnosed a faulty clutch master cylinder as the culprit and or improper bleeding.

As far as the chatter is concerned ... you basically only hear it when standing outside the car. However, I noticed on the one I had installed for me that there is more chatter when I accelerate off the line ... and this I can hear on the inside. It lasts for a few seconds and then it's gone.
Is this normal?
Thanks ...

The ESS kits started at $620 a few years ago ( before we started making our own steel billet flywheels and they raised their prices) so at that time they were the best value for sprung hub complete kit.The noise varies from car to car. Idle noise is the most noticeable with clutch pedal out. Some users have mentioned a slight noise in 1st and 2nd before 3K ( no performance issues reported).

Ok i have a 20th, BT gt2871r, with Unitronics 630cc file. I had recently had 1st and 2nd syncros replaced and new clutch installed, 2,300$ later still paying it off! Relized that put in stock clutch!and had a southbend stage 2 clutch inthere thought they swapped it with the same but NO they didnt, So dont know how long mine is going to last so i have been taking it easy on it, which is realy fustrating since its built for speed.
Which do you think would be the best set up for me that you offer. And fairly Not to costly, since i am in a hole as it is! If you can do any specail deal Let me know (IM me to keep private) if that is best for you. Thanks man

ok, i know i'm getting due for a new clutch, i've got a 6spd sitting around 260hp/280lbs There are so many options listed here my head is spinning. It's my daily driver, but i am planning on taking it to the track for laps, not sprints, what would you suggest?

Just got my Southbend Stage III clutch installed w/ the 16lb steel flywheel. Drives great and engages smooth. I am a little bit dissappointed w/ the clatter at idle. It sounds like a loud diesel except the noise comes from the bellhousing. Going to try and bump the idle up to help remedy. Overall though I am happy

Anytime you go from a Dual Mass to a Single Mass Flywheel the noise will be more audible. The heavier flywheels make less noise than the lighter ones.

I have 20th with minor mods, chip, intake, TIP, DV, and I plan on getting TB exhaust and FMIC. That is it, nothing major, no crazy hp. I have to get a new clutch, pressure plate and bearing. Do you have a kit with the A slightly better than stock clutch, without a flywheel. My flywheel is fine, and i am not interested in upgrading it. Let me know asap, I will place a order today if you have what I need!Thank you for your help!

Ok i have a 2003 20th AE gti 02m Trans 6 speed, with gt2871r turbo running at 20 psi which its running at 300hp+. i had a southbend stage 3 clutch, then had syncros replaced and clutch but the shop put in a stock clutch!? now starting to hear clicking when let go of the gas, and starting to slip if at 4500rpms if shifting and accelerating even in 6th so it is time for a new/Better one!
I am looking for a clutch kit for 02m 6 speed with 350hp rating but comes complete with all parts needed for swap, so a price and details would be great! thanks for your time.

I'm looking at getting the clutchnet stage 2 i'm not running bt or anything just the normal mods(flash, exhaust, intake, etc.). what do you think. Also how many miles are you getting out of stage 2 kits on a normal daily driver as compared to the stock clutches?
(O8o)=337==\X/=====(o8O)
#70
Clutch mileage is driver dependent. The friction materials are both organic, so the difference would be in the pressure plate. The stage 2 is really not needed for your car. Here are a few kits that use a sprung hub disc ( from stage 2 kit), OE pressure plate and Steel Billet Single mass flywheel.
