How was it? Last i heard, his stuff is pretty dark and tribal. Is that still true??

I didn't notice much tribal in his set. But honestly, when I'm taking photos, I don't pay super close attention to the sets. Which kinda sucks, but oh well I guess.
Sasha is playing Beta Thursday night. Can't wait for that ****.

^ I read an article about this on Beatportal.com
I've been a fan of Farina since the first time I heard him play live This stuff (Mushroom Jazz) is suppose to be more mellow than what he typically spins (funky & chicago house)

So what do you guys think of Steve Lawler? I saw/shot him this weekend. Wasn't all that impressed.

Same here. I usually enjoy his CDs but everytime i've seen him live left me a bit disappointed.

Agreed, saw him at Cielo a couple of years ago and I was really bored. I like his CDs but I don't think I'll ever go out just to see him again.
I've been listening to a lot of Steve Porter for the past couple of years.

Some artist are just better in the studio. Take Booka Shade for example, the music they produce is amazing but I would not recommend seeing them live

I got ya. I liked booka shade live PA. I feel the opposite way about Luciano. Great liveset DJ, but his mix CDs arent that good.

Pretty much. He just didn't build up to anything....very monotonous, not as tribal as expected, not as 'dirty' as i wanted it, sound levels were way off (highs were almost painful at times). I thought maybe it was a bad set so I went to see him again and it was the same. He might have been better in a small room though.
OTOH, I find Mark Farina's CDs are 'ok', worth listening to but don't stay in the CD changer for long, BUT he is awesome live. Gets a nice groove going and keeps the whole room bumping.

You should, I'm definitely going. I'm leaving work at 11, meeting a friend and shooting straight over afterwards. If I put ur name on the list I believe it's only $10
Can't f****** wait!

Edit:
He's gonna be promoting his new release so half of his set is gonna be mellow but the other half is gonna be the typical funky chicago house sweetness
And for your hearing pleasure:

I normally don't like house, but that said, I can't stop listening to Axwell's Essential Mix from August '06.
And on that note, I will be seeing Steve Lawler this weekend. Going sober - got stuff to do the next day. The only other artists I have seen are David Seaman (awesome set - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ3JwiNmr7g) and Sharam of Deep Dish.

Soooo you DO like house!
The thing about house music in general is that most people that don't usually listen to it CAN put up with it. For example, at a bar, lounge or club...they might even dance to it. Not many other genres of music can do this.
Regardless, you seem to have pretty good taste for someone who "normally doesn't like house"

Well there's stuff that I really like, and there's some stuff that I can't listen to for more than a couple of minutes. It also depends on if my mood has been 'enhanced' if you catch my drift. I'm a really big Axwell fan though - I Found U, Let It Go, etc are awesome tracks. I also REALLY like Dirty South.

Those are good tracks. I remember listening to Dirty South's remix of "Let it go" at a private invite only afterhours party before that track was even released. It stuck in my head that night and a month later it was #1 on Beatport's Top 10!
