Not contributing to any mileage here, but many who have posted in this thread havn't got anything near 'high mileage'.

Things must be pretty different over here in Australia - ~30k miles would be considered an almost new car, and most will probably see 300,000km soon enough

yes 30k meaning 30,000 miles is still considered new in the US too. Not sure if they are just posting up something and will update us later. We'll see, stay tuned.cheers as you say.

I'm going to drive this car until the wheels fall off. I'm hoping the 2.5L will make it that long. The rest of the car should.

PO bought it late '06 with 6k, he drove it 130+ miles a day.

I bought it 3/31/11 with 126,104. I drive 120+ a day M-F, usually average about 700 a week, sometimes more. i drive the chit out of it. sees WOT 2nd-4th usually once a day, 75-85 for most of my trip, prolonged 90's occasionally, and triple digits about once a week for short periods (rarely more than a minute or two. usually just when people think they have something better than a "Rabbit" that sounds good... )

Revo Stage 2, 3" stainless no-cat turbo back into stock rear muffler/tips, K&N filter insert, H&R Super Sport springs, Autotech adjustable rear sway bar. (unsure of mileage when everything was installed, but wouldnt doubt from 50K or earlier)

runs like theres no tomorrow and shifts like a brand new car. cam follower check and sub frame bolt/spacers planned after i get back from my vacation next week.

change oil every 4-5K, uses about %75 of a quart within that time. TB/WP changed @ 100K. uses no fluids at all besides oil. everything stays pretty much exactly where left last. bottom side of engine is very clean all things considered. I'm a 24 year old BMW tech and frequently have 20+ year European marque techs compliment on how clean the bottom side is.

i know its more info than usually posted, but i thought it might be of interest to some because the mileage is so high and things done to/with it. these guys with 30-40-50K miles, HA!!! LOL.

best of all... i gave less than half the KBB price for it. i was in the right place at the right time.

Bajabug72: good to hear it's running like new...a friend has decided to sell all of his VW's since his 08 GTI was burning 2qrts every 5k...the dealers mechanics fixed it, but still burns 1 to 1-1/2 qrts every 5k. VWOA isn't willing to do anything more and is satisfied that it's fixed within tolerance...you being a BMW Tech, aren't you concerned about 4/5qrts burned every 5k? Does that seem normal and tollerable? Also, if that much oil is burned, assuming it's not leaking out, it's going out the tailpipe or getting trapped in the Cat? I'm assuming it wouldn't pass inspection if it burned oil like that...you input would be appreciated. Thanks.

      forgive me for thread jacking...

      @ MK5CNY
i didnt realize how i had written that, it should read 3/4 quart as in %75 of a quart every 5k. my bad. i'll fix the post so as to not confuse anybody else. FYI, i use 5w-30 Castrol Synthetic. if its good enough for a BMW from the factory and @ the dealer, then its good enough for my Volkswagen... LOL
i was slightly worried about what its burning now, but id rather it be consistent like it is at that amount rather than hit or miss and at different amounts. in all reality, its not really that much in the big scheme of things. considering it has 135k+ miles, and its a turbo car, both of those scream oil burner in my book. i know its not leaking it anywhere, because aside from road grime/dirt, you could literally eat off of my block, no kidding. the only cleaning ive ever done was washing off the oil during oil changes because i dont have one of the handy dandy little filter housing drain tools. also, in Alabama, we dont have vehicle inspections, unless the car is being reinstated as a salvage title. kinda nice because i was able to drive a ratty looking but mechanically sound '65 Beetle for about a year and a half without any worry whatsoever. on the same token tho, theres all kinds of crap running around with stuff falling off the car, burning oil or running so rich you cant see from the smoke screen for 1/8 mile behind it, as well as just chitty cars in general.

BMW has an ungodly rate of acceptable oil consumption. IIRC its like .71 liters/1000 kilometers. if my math is correct, that translates roughly to 1 quart/830 miles. i'd be dumping a quart in nearly every week, thats just ridiculous... the standard inline 6's and V8's hold 7 and 8.5 quarts, so you have more to go around if it does eat some, but that just seems unreal. in my years time at BMW, we've had a few that were nearly that bad, but i didnt deal with them and dont know what the outcome was, nor the situation on parts like the cat and such. that much oil seems like it would be damaging to the cat, but what do i know, im just a mechanic... the bad part is that of the cars i recall that were eating the oil, they were less than 2 or 3 years old, but past the break-in point (where abnormal consumption is expected and not really taken into consideration except in extreme cases, esp. V8's)

your buddys GTI falls well within BMW's consumption standards, which would equate to more than 5 quarts every 5k miles. i would imagine VW's standards wouldnt be far from it but hopefully much less. me personally, 2 or more quarts every 5k seems excessive no matter what engine it is. if the cars got 100k+ miles(you didnt say how many), 1 to 1.5 doesnt seem to extreme, but its highly dependent on driving style(old fart/hellion), type of driving (highway/city), if it was changed every 5-7k since new, and even what kind of gas was used(good/chitty brand) throughout the entire life of the car. all are deciding factors in long term engine life and consumption of fluids. The 1.8t's ive worked on in the past, particularly Passat b5/5.5, when consuming large quantities of oil, it was collecting in the intercooler piping from turbo shaft bushing blow by during low/zero boost situations. you could pull the bottom hose on the intercooler and it looked like you pulled the drain plug in the pan. pull the turbo, and the shaft felt like it was mounted on a heim joint. I dont know if that is or will be the case on the BPY's because ive not dealt with them near as much, but it wouldnt surprise me if mine started this after the 175-200k mark, granted i dont rebuild/refresh by then.

by all means, i dont know everything and i'll be the first to admit it, but i know what ive learned/seen/done during personal experiences, be it at school, in a shop setting, or side work in my garage.
