I'm going to try and do an introductory photography course to try and shift out of my comfort zone a bit.

      Anyone have any good suggestions?

Matt, have a look at "Learning to See Creatively", 2nd Edition. It seems pretty good.

I've also been in the market for an dSLR camera.

I've been looking at the Canon, inparticular the EOS 450D, EOS 40D and EOS 50D.

I had a look on CNEt and found that the Nikon 90D received great reviews and the camera also features video recording.

Anyone have either the Canon or Nikon?
Would I be better off getting a Canon EOS 1000D body and a decent lens

mdt how r u finding ur new camera?
i know u haven't had it for long but i was thinking abt getting a DSLR and then someone told me abt the canon which u got
after asking a few ppl, they told me to not bother with it and just get a dslr however i'm still a bit daunted by doing so, and figured something in between like urs would be a good idea esp since it's not too expensive and it certainly takes some good shots!
anyway, let us know if u find any good photography courses too - have always been interested in taking one!

Daniel, if you've not got any existing lenses then Nikon or Canon will be fine. Maybe 2-3 years ago I think Canon had the edge over Nikon in the entry-mid level dSLR market. Now, pretty much same, same. So go to your local camera shop and play with a few models and see what feels best for you. In real terms most bodies (within reason) will outlast your abilities, so the general rule applies, if you can, get better lenses and revise your camera budget. If you can afford high end for body and lenses, then even better.

Canon has a much bigger footprint globally now than Nikon, and especially in Australia. If you are after a DSLR, want to develop your skills and progressively build your kit, go Canon. Whatever you can afford to start.

Well I haven't regretted buying the G10 over a DSLR for a moment, with the possible exception of when I watched that short film filmed with a 50D posted by mjair (if you haven't seen it, go back and have a look, it's stunning).

Still planning to do the course.

Starting to play around with the non-auto settings. This sim cam works a treat:

      Ok OK.
So the Nikon D60 looks to be the new camera to get.
But for people like me who want a pre loved model, what is the go ?
To start I'm just looking for something which will be easy to use, taking landscape and portrait shots on my 6 week holiday.
When I get the time I'll look for a good macro lens as I like detailed pics of bugs etc.
Is the Nikon D200 up to scratch ?
Whats it worth 2nd hand ?

      I'm studying DPReview now...

      TIA

I went camera shopping today to replace my ailing old IXUS. The new IXUS 980is looks good, but ultimately I would prefer the G10. Only thing with the G10 is the size obviously. Also, I saw all these tele-converters etc at the camera shop. Can I ask what it does? Is it to amplify the zoom? So for example, if it is 2x, does it mean the 5x optical zoom on the G10 becomes 10 times? Lastly, can the G10 fit these things? I am wondering if I should just not bother with my 30D if the G10 can do that...

      Google is your friend.

      According to Canon:
"TC-DC58D Tele Converter Lens for Canon G10 Digital Camera. This Tele Converter requires Lens Adapter LA-DC58K to attach this lens to the PowerShot G10 Digital Camera. It will convert your focal distance to 196mm (1.4x)."

A teleconverter is designed to give you some increase in your lens' apparent focal length at the cost of light. It basically optically crops the image causing the same overall loss of light. A 1.4X teleconverter will multiply your focal length by 1.4X AND your lens' aperture f-number by the same amount which is 1 f-stop. Losing one f-stop of light means you're left with only half the light. For example, at 140mm (equivalent) your G10 has a maximum aperture of f4.5. With this teleconverter, the lens will max out at 196mm at f6.3.

There are a few major drawbacks to using a teleconverter. The first is that any additional glass in the optical chain will decrease image quality. This is an even bigger issue with screw-on teleconverters that attach to the end of the lens. Another drawback is that you'll lose a stop of light (1.4X TC) meaning your auto-focus may suffer and you'll need to compensate with a higher ISO adding more noise or a slower shutter speed adding to the possibility of camera shake blurring. Multiplying your focal length will further add to the possibility of camera shake blurring.

wayne - check out the panasonic tz15 - 10x optical zoom with Leica lens.. utlimately not as good as a g10 perhaps but more compact and can take some great pics, plus does movies in 30fps 1280 x 720 great for ollie.

you are welcome to demo mine any time.

Think carefully about whether you need a back up battery and charger for this phone Michael. I bought one because I really needed it for the outgoing Sony, but I have yet to see the G10 drop from having all bars on the battery indicator. So, with the benefit of hindsight, I'm not sure you need one.

      Really love the camera too.

I was in two minds the whole time as to whether I get a compact like the new ixus 980 or the chunkier but much more serious camera in the G10. No regret so far.

I guess it had to happen, Canon is finally fighting back. All those phone companies putting cameras in their phones, and now Canon is putting a phone in their camera!

Does it do SMS and video calls too?

Thanks for the tip. Good to know it lasts well. On a recent trip I used all 3 of my batteries on the 5D - took a lot of shots though, and many were time exposures.

looks like the G10 is becoming the Vortex equivalent of the 135....
I just grabbed one as a small camera to carry around when I don't want to carry an SLR (or don't feel like dealing with the smartass comments about the size of my camera, which is most of the time at the moment....)

Most useless post I have put on Tex but picked up a Nikon D40 @ JB Hi-Fi for $583 with the 18-55mm lens. Went out to the Temora Air Show yesterday - it was a great camera to 'point and shoot'. Typically, have not read the manual yet - only the 'quick guide'.

So far - very impressed for what we only need at the moment, an entry level dSLR. Our old Canon A80 is being relegated to the shelf for a while.

It's the latest trend in the COI world MickyD! Seriously though, I am pissed that I didn't jump on the deal Matty got. I had to pay $630 as the store wouldn't match $619 at Digital Camera Warehouse (who didn't have stock). Matty paid $619 and got a $50 voucher!

Have you send in for your free case yet from Canon? If you got it post 15/10 you can redeem a case from canon, and it's actually not a half bad one.

      oh, and ergonomics FTW.....

Thanks for heads up about the camera case. I was pissed off because I had to hunt around on the Canon website to work out how to get one, but I might do it now.

Sandisk 8gb. Prolly OTT. I had one for the last camera which I really bought for filming track days. Since I stopped racing I've never needed anywhere near that, but it's better than running out.

8Gb is massive. But I was more refering to the speed of the card. What class is it? I want to know what you think of the speed and if my class 6 is an overkill and I should just use that on my DV and get something cheaper for the camera.

Just picked up my Canon 450D wih twin Lense kit!

Can't wait to have a play around with it.

I only have a 1gb SD card for it at the moment. how many photos would that store on the largest pic size?

    33. 11-21-2008 01:04 AM #139
My Nikon D60 which I use a 8GB card and shoot in RAW holds about 500 pics!

My P&S Canon 8.1MP can hold up to 6000 pics with it
