looks like the G10 is becoming the Vortex equivalent of the 135....
I just grabbed one as a small camera to carry around when I don't want to carry an SLR (or don't feel like dealing with the smartass comments about the size of my camera, which is most of the time at the moment....)

Wow, that G10 is pretty big! Think you're a bit of a pro, mate?

Most useless post I have put on Tex but picked up a Nikon D40 @ JB Hi-Fi for $583 with the 18-55mm lens. Went out to the Temora Air Show yesterday - it was a great camera to 'point and shoot'. Typically, have not read the manual yet - only the 'quick guide'.
So far - very impressed for what we only need at the moment, an entry level dSLR. Our old Canon A80 is being relegated to the shelf for a while.

It's the latest trend in the COI world MickyD! Seriously though, I am pissed that I didn't jump on the deal Matty got. I had to pay $630 as the store wouldn't match $619 at Digital Camera Warehouse (who didn't have stock). Matty paid $619 and got a $50 voucher!

Have you send in for your free case yet from Canon? If you got it post 15/10 you can redeem a case from canon, and it's actually not a half bad one.

oh, and ergonomics FTW.....

Thanks for heads up about the camera case. I was pissed off because I had to hunt around on the Canon website to work out how to get one, but I might do it now.

Yeah I have to find the receipt and get the case. Mdt, what SD card did you get? I got a Class 6 SDHC and am happy with the speed.

Sandisk 8gb. Prolly OTT. I had one for the last camera which I really bought for filming track days. Since I stopped racing I've never needed anywhere near that, but it's better than running out.

8Gb is massive. But I was more refering to the speed of the card. What class is it? I want to know what you think of the speed and if my class 6 is an overkill and I should just use that on my DV and get something cheaper for the camera.

Just picked up my Canon 450D wih twin Lense kit!
Can't wait to have a play around with it.
I only have a 1gb SD card for it at the moment. how many photos would that store on the largest pic size?

14. 11-21-2008 01:04 AM #139
My Nikon D60 which I use a 8GB card and shoot in RAW holds about 500 pics!
My P&S Canon 8.1MP can hold up to 6000 pics with it

Now Liz wants a compact camera to stick in her handbag. What's the G10 of small cameras? Saw a shmick looking Leica the other day, but close to $1,000.

Stick to Canon. IS980 is what you want.

Lumix is a great camera. Car UK had a short description of the cameras they use, lumix LX2 is their choice for point and shoot.
Lumix and the leica are the same camera.

I bought a lesser Lumix a couple of years ago for the little lady, and she loves it. Takes a nice photo too. DMC-FX01 (it's probably up to FX999 by now) Leica lens, Panasonic electronics. Worth looking at. Nothing wrong with the canons either.

22. 12-21-2008 06:23 AM #147
Evidently Leica use the Lumix guts and do their own software to make them work "better". I have the Leica D-Lux 3. It's a lovely little camera, and I like the 16:9 wide screen photos it takes, as these translate directly onto a plasma or LCD display for playback. There's now a D-Lux 4 out, but I'm not sure of the differences.
If you want a longer zoom range the C-Lux range have 5x zoom, and 10MP.
I use the D-Lux 3 to take photos that would be the same aspect ratio as a high definition video camera so I can see what shots I can get from a certain mounting location.

Leicas are beautifully made. Another good compact is the Sigma DP 1, also around $1k.

So should I be resigned to paying more for a compant than the G10? That was nowhere near $1k.

Matty, trust me, a IS980 (which is $100 or so less than G10) is more than competent! You are talking about snaps here, not photography. It's silly to spend any more than $500! And IS980 is HIGH QUALITY compact. Talk to you more about it at lunch.
