    Thread: SLR thread

    1. 08-30-2010 08:54 AM #401
there's part of me that wants to flog off almost everything and 'just' have a 5d2, 50/1.4, 17-40, 24-70, 70-200, 300/4, and the 150-500, but then I think about the macro lens that I wouldn't sell.... etc. etc...

      an old pic...

    2. 08-30-2010 07:11 PM #402
I rationalised my system and have whittled it down to just the 24-70 and 70-300.
Covers every useful focal range but I'm finding a need for a good macro.

am looking to buy one of those cameras that are not quite an SLR but not a little digital camera....
one with a proper lens and proper optical zoom.
      any suggestions?

Sigma would be your best bet. You may need to carry around a tripod though...

I'd say micro 4/3rds cam would be good.

I used my camera on the weekend, bout 150 shots at a friends 1 year olds bday party. Before that I've hardly used it, especially since Oran park closed down. Need something new to take photos of, but what

      yep. what Floody said.

All depends on how much you want to spend. I've got a Canon G10 as a little camera, though I think my idea of a little camera is somewhat different to other peoples

      oh, and Canon ergonomics fail:

(and white balance fail too, but there you go)

      Also no in built flash(?)

I'm effectively looking for a point and click camera - that's good - with all the bits built in.
Don't wanna go crazy with the photos - but don't want the crappy shots that come from the bottom rung type cameras.

Canon G11 (assuming it's not too big).

I dont think I'd ever decide on a camera based on it's looks, but that is one ugly bit of kit

      Canon s90?

Good little camera, bit of tech to keep you happy.

GF1 has flash hidden in the top

If you don't really need interchangeable lenses but want to step up from the garden variety P&S, also look at the Canon G11 as already suggested or the Panasonic LX3 or upcoming Panasonic LX5.

And put them in your hands before buying. There is more to this than specifications and price.

firstly - wow - exxy at paxtons. internet prices are like 25% cheaper!

G11 looks like the front runner atm. Checked out the S90. think i want a bit more tech/settings that the G11 provides.

Other one i checked out was the sigma - alot more exxy... and no inbuilt flash, so a no go for me.

last camera i had was a kodak quickshot or some rubbish i got for free. it had no zoom... nice.

now i just gotta learn what all the numbers and settings mean

Canon announced the S95 last week. Adds 720p video and a few other minor tweaks..

Thinking of getting one (or the Lumix LX5) before my next trip OS.

    18. 08-31-2010 12:05 AM #418
I think the G12 is about to be announced as well, if it hasn't already been.

      There's a guy selling a G11 on OzAudi -- wants $500. See http://www.ozaudi.com/forums/showthr...375#post243375

We have a g10 or g11 at w ork, never really lookec properly. If I had to have 1 camera its what I would get.

S90 is a good little buddy fits in a pocket easy, makes good pictures. But having it as well as a dslr is good. Gives you a decent amount of control.

Dont think our camera at work, g series has ever been taken off auto.

in no massive rush to get it - will get one oct/nov as it's a present for me...... on my gf's bday
will be good if the G12 comes out before then - HD vid would be nice.

as auR32 said - it's the feel of it as well... have read alot of them feel very cheap and plasticy in the hands. want something that feels like it'll last a while.

Also - can get a new G11 off ebay for $540 delivered, not bad.

Sounds like your needs warrant a crop sensor body to get that extra oomph from the focal lengths.
Though a few f-stops faster would be handy with faster shutter speeds too...
      Dilemma indeed...
      just ordered a 7D and a 70-200/2.8 IS II
seems the new AF in the 7D is the flying honey producers patellas, and the new 70-200 is also awesome.
Will get the new 2x extender III when it becomes available as well - already have the canon 1.4x. Probably makes the 300/4L IS I have redundant - I'll compare the 70-200+1.4x when it arrives and see if the 300 is still better....

will sell the 40D, the 50D, the 70-200/4L, and a couple of others when I get round to it.

aaand just cancelled the order, they didn't state that they shipped from HK. I'm not willing to risk having to pay GST on an order of that size. fvckers.

Where from? Some of those grey importers have a dodgy way of staying under the threshold.
      I think DWI do that.

Shame on the refund tho, sounds like an amazing rig. Did you get my IM about being able to get 30% off RRP on Canon pro equipment thru my bro-in-law?

    25. 09-13-2010 09:38 PM #425
      yeah it was DWI.
It was also going to come with a foreign charger and a photocopied manual.

is it 30% of RRP? I'm starting to think it might be worth it, but at the same time I'm impatient and the money is burning a hole in my pocket
