I have the 28-200mm G
#386
Compensation is my middle name. That's why I'm also getting a TC-17E teleconverter with the 70-200 2.8.
Yeah, got a 28-200mm. I imagine it will be on the camera a lot, especially when the missus is carrying it.
Do you have the G or D series?
Also, stopped by JB Hi-Fi after work and the dude offered the Sigma 50mm for $510.
Factoring in the 10% GST rebate when we fly out, that's cheaper than any of the HK sellers on Ebay.
Will post pictures of it later eating the Nikkor 50mm.

Guess this is a good place to post some work. I've been playing around with CS5I went straight for the Content Aware filter and here are the results. These are photos I took of a friend and her bf at xmas.
Original
CS4 using clone tool. This was my first go at using the clone.

I think I went a bit too far on the tree in the middle above his head, and clouds above the tree line on the right but this feature is brilliant. I will never trust another photo ever again![]()

It's understandable for getting rid of the tree but the retouched edge conflicts with the general shape of the others.
How much of the image is cropped? Also, what monitor are you using? Either you or I need to get some calibration
#391
Mikey, thanks for your recommendations. They look terrific. In fact, the 7D is actually better than the 5D mkII for what I need and it's cheaper.

No probs. It pains me to recommend outside of the Nikon family, but their pricing is a lot more flexible than the Nikon kunts in Australia.
#393
Yeah the tree was difficult and when I switch back and forth I don't like the edging, I think I'll give it another go. It's a difficult object because the background line of trees is the same colours as what I'm trying to get rid of.
As the images are just from my Facebook account, they look the same size, but the top and bottom are un-cropped and unchanged colour wise. The middle image has been cropped in LR and then edited in CS4. Also that file was a TIFF that I saved as a JPG, so it's not your monitor, it's the file. The colours of all three look the same on my system at home and my laptop at work. I think all the work I did on the CS4 file took me a couple of days on and off, failing and the then re-trying but the CS5 only took an hour or two :thumb:

Nikon Australia have a $200 cashback on the D700.
Coupled with the sh1tty Aussie dollar, there's only about a $300 discrepancy between buying local and
getting one from HK. The D700 also comes with a 2-year warranty as opposed to 1.
I'll probably end up getting the body locally...
I want the new 24mm 1.4 Nikkor bad.
#395
Finally got it.
With the GST rebate and $200 cashback, it'll end up costing me $2700 Aussie.
Pretty happy with that. Absolute beast with the Sigma 50 1.4.

Looks like a beefy unit (That's what she said) I like the detail where the strap attaches to the body. Where does that sit in the Nikon lineup? Still want one of those Panasonic micro 4/3rds units not sure my lousy skills warrant it though...
#397
D300S < D700 < D3S < D3X, so third from the top.
It comes with the 2nd year warranty perks as offered for the other pro cameras in their range.
#398
floody , nice feature - i like the fact that it also removed the shadow to the left of screen...

thread dig.
I'm tossing up between the 7d and the 5d2 at the moment, and thinking the 7d might win since most my my photography is motorsports or wildlife (birds of the feathered variety)
I'll sell the 40D and the 50D either way, though if I get the 5d2 I'll also sell the 10-22, the 30/1.4, and a couple of cheap ef-s lenses, and probably get the sigma 50/1.4 to go with it. I'd like the 50/1.2 but it's 3.5x the price of the sigma.
gotta love a good dilemma....
#400
So one is crop sensor, the other is full frame?
Sounds like your needs warrant a crop sensor body to get that extra oomph from the focal lengths.
Though a few f-stops faster would be handy with faster shutter speeds too...
Dilemma indeed...

there's part of me that wants to flog off almost everything and 'just' have a 5d2, 50/1.4, 17-40, 24-70, 70-200, 300/4, and the 150-500, but then I think about the macro lens that I wouldn't sell.... etc. etc...
an old pic...

I rationalised my system and have whittled it down to just the 24-70 and 70-300.
Covers every useful focal range but I'm finding a need for a good macro.

am looking to buy one of those cameras that are not quite an SLR but not a little digital camera....
one with a proper lens and proper optical zoom.
any suggestions?

No, something like this

yep. what Floody said.
All depends on how much you want to spend. I've got a Canon G10 as a little camera, though I think my idea of a little camera is somewhat different to other peoples
oh, and Canon ergonomics fail:
(and white balance fail too, but there you go)
#411
hmm, think the gizmos and whizbangs are a bit much for me...
Also no in built flash(?)
I'm effectively looking for a point and click camera - that's good - with all the bits built in.
Don't wanna go crazy with the photos - but don't want the crappy shots that come from the bottom rung type cameras.

Canon G11 (assuming it's not too big).

Canon s90?
Good little camera, bit of tech to keep you happy.
#415
GF1 has flash hidden in the top
If you don't really need interchangeable lenses but want to step up from the garden variety P&S, also look at the Canon G11 as already suggested or the Panasonic LX3 or upcoming Panasonic LX5.
And put them in your hands before buying. There is more to this than specifications and price.![]()

just went to paxtons and checked em out...
firstly - wow - exxy at paxtons. internet prices are like 25% cheaper!
G11 looks like the front runner atm. Checked out the S90. think i want a bit more tech/settings that the G11 provides.
Other one i checked out was the sigma - alot more exxy... and no inbuilt flash, so a no go for me.
last camera i had was a kodak quickshot or some rubbish i got for free. it had no zoom... nice.
now i just gotta learn what all the numbers and settings mean![]()

Canon announced the S95 last week. Adds 720p video and a few other minor tweaks..
Thinking of getting one (or the Lumix LX5) before my next trip OS.
#418
I think the G12 is about to be announced as well, if it hasn't already been.

There's a guy selling a G11 on OzAudi -- wants $500. See http://www.ozaudi.com/forums/showthr...375#post243375

We have a g10 or g11 at w ork, never really lookec properly. If I had to have 1 camera its what I would get.
S90 is a good little buddyfits in a pocket easy, makes good pictures. But having it as well as a dslr is good. Gives you a decent amount of control.
Dont think our camera at work, g series has ever been taken off auto.![]()
