Hey guys. Wanting to get thoughts on where to buy my 70-200 2.8 ... I'm not paying $3000 for it so grey market it is, but who have people bought from and would you buy again?

      3 places I'm considering

      DWI = $2059
      http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/...idProduct=2292

      eGlobal = $2029
      http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com...ii-lenses.html

d-d Photographic have two prices, one is from the aussie store ($2399) and the other is their Singapore ($2169).

EDIT: hhmmm apparently DWI and EGlobal are the same company?

if you can handle the size (s******), it would be awesome. Almost SLR sized sensor in a relatively compact body. Not really a pocket camera, unless you mean a jacket pocket though.
If you want something really pocketable, it's hard to go past the S100.

Customs will do everything to pursuade you to declare it when you enter the country again. Just know that their system isn't synched to Toruist Refund Scheme database.

Thanks, bought one on your fine recommendation! Just wanted a better result w/out going full DSLR.
Initial pics are pretty good compared to the pocket Canons we have laying around the house
Just need to read the manual now Size isn't really an issue

It's funny that it's not linked to the Australian one, when I've heard of people seem to be getting pulled up by customs over stuff that has been claimed on TRS equivalents in other countries (I think it was Singapore specifically)

    13. 05-02-2012 07:09 AM #1449
**** that was a badly written post

Last time I went OS I meant to fill out the form that says what stuff you're carrying out so you don't run the risk of being charged GST on the way back in. Completely forgot, and had zero issues bringing the camera gear back in (and there would have been about 7k worth in the bag)

So Micky, now that you've had your recent acquisition for a while, what's the fish eye lens of choice for the 7D?

there's not exactly a lot of options out there really, it's a pretty niche lens. I've been flat out the last few weeks, and haven't even used it since I took the dog photo

I'm doing club swimming shots at St Michaels swimming pool tomorrow in St Kilda. Because it is a club meet, everyone in the picture will be part of the story, so a fisheye would be perfect. I might only publish one or two pics, but it would be something quite different from everything else.

They use one at MSAC from an olympic meet or similar a few years ago. Advertising hoardings all around the pool. But it's quite a striking image.

Awesome. 4 till 6. St Michael's is on Chapel Street just over Dandenong Road from my place.

You might even be able to help me with the white balance of the pool light. I made a meal of it last time.

Matt, are you sure it's a fisheye you're after, and not a normal ultrawide?

I'm not sure at all. Watching Kai's review of your lens again, it seems more suited for poking in people's faces rather than getting an expansive view of a large scene. Might have to get both.

gimme a moment, I'm just uploading some comparisons between a wide angle at 10mm, fish @ 10mm, and fish @ 8mm....

    26. 05-04-2012 09:27 PM #1464
I think if you haven't got a 10-22 (or similar) you'd be better off with one of them first, the fisheye distorts things a LOT, which is fine, and a lot of fun, but the 10-22 is a more sensible option first.

excuse the disgraceful state of my study/dump.....

      10-22 rectilinear wide angle @ 10mm

      8-15 fisheye @ 10mm

      8-15 fisheye @ 8mm

      That's interesting, thanks Micky.

That said, it's the fish eye lens effect I'm looking for. The top one doesn't seem too distinct from what I'm able to get with the 24 to 70mm.

You've got me thinking though, I should perhaps take my plastic fantastic and see if it can serve any purpose this afternoon, despite its limited focal length.

For those with Foxtel/FetchTV/etc., there's an interesting doco on NatGeo about Jim Frazier and his crazy lenses.. Repeat at 10.30pm tonight and 10.30am tomorrow at least.. Called the Aussie who baffled the world.

Sorry, I realise we've discussed this before, but what's the Canon short-range head shot lens of choice. Don't mind a prime. Something really fast would be good.

      Portrait lens?

On a crop sensor, the 50mm 1.8 should be working well for you.. On full frame, the Canon 85mm 1.2 is the stuff of legend...

Could you use the 1.2 on a crop sensor and then just edit out any vignetting? Most of my pics are heavily cropped anyway.

Apparently you can use the 1.2 for indoor sports spots although you'd obviously get a lot of missed shots owing to the limited depth of field and slow AF. I really struggled with the light in the pool Saturday evening.

you won't get vignetting with the 1.2 on a crop sensor, if anything you're LESS likely to get vignetting on a crop sensor with any lens.
