Thread: Whats the best upgrade turbo for my 2004 jetta GLI?

    1. 11-09-2008 09:34 PM #1
i hear people talking about t3 and t4 but also about gt30r whats the best for my 2004 Jetta GLI?

    2. 11-09-2008 09:40 PM #2
It all depends on your definition of "best." Some say the best would be a GT28RS where you have quick spool with decent top end power. Others aren't satisfied until they can break traction in 5th with something much larger like a GT35R.

You need to start by establishing your power goals, and then work from there.

It also helps to know what your car is going to be used for (Drag, Street, Auto-x, Dyno-queen, etc.)

    3. 11-09-2008 09:43 PM #3
also depends on how much you wanna spend.

    4. 11-09-2008 09:50 PM #4
Yes, if you want to break it down into more variables, you can include price and even get into reliability. But a good place to start is to look into a realistic power goal (dependent on your application) and to work from there.

Do some looking in the FAQ and some searching to give you some ideas.

3076 is going to put you in the 400 numbers and is a nice sized turbo. You will need a built bottom end at the least to run that turbo. A built aem/intake mani would be the way to go to properly utilize the turbo. Look up arnold at pag parts, hes "AL@pagparts" on here i believe. Thats where i bought my kit, great guy and EXCELLENT quality hardware.

what made you choose the 3076?

well the 3076 will make your 1st through 3rd silly stupid... thats the power its capable of making. If your looking to just keep it on the street but have more power than stock... i would look into the gt28rs... spool is a little later than stock but not to bad... and you would gain a lot of top end... compared to stock.. do you have a specific power goal?

No one knows what your definition of "kick ass" is. At least throw out some number.

Stock internals are good till about 300whp. The torque spike is what will throw rods.

so i mean u think a 3076 is to much for street use or can it be daily driven?

no, it can be a daily... thats what I have and alot of other guys on here. But its not a turbo you just throw on and drive with. the kit plus all the connections components you have to replace/upgrade will put you in the 6-7k easilly and thats if you do all your own work.... and that isnt with a built aem head/mani or lsd... it gets expensive real fast.

How deep are your pockets for a bt an whats your power goal?

I would look either look into the cheaper options then... look to grab up a t3/t4 50 trim .63 hotside. That will make 350 wheel all day long and a little more if you want. Its a rather cheaper kit, not hardware wise but the turbo is a journal bearing vs the ball bearing. You could grab up a kit from arnold for around 2500 I would assume.. don't quote me.. but it would be around there. If you didn't want to do rods right away and build the bottom end.. you could keep the boost moderate.. until you got the cash/time to do it.

I am a fan of the GT3071R 63ar. Good turbo for daily driving, good spool, and good top end. If you want more power a GT3076R, and if you're on a budget a T3T4E 50trim.

This is a GT3076R on the kinetic kit:

You probably also want to consider drop in rods if you're gunning for more than 325~350+whp
