I recently purchased a set of early style strut mounts for my MKII Scirocco.
Here is a picture of the original set.

After cleaning them up with the bead blaster and a coat or two of SEM and clear coat they came out nice.

We ordered a set of Early MKI Prothane bushings from here
    http://store.blackforestindust....html

The white rings are NLA and mine was rather hard and goughed so I opted to order the stop ring from a 924 since they are much flexible and cheap from the Porsche dealership. http://i87.photobucket.com/alb...7.jpg
Here is the bag with the part number on it. $2.81 each

We also replaced the mount bolts, nuts and washers.
We took the bearings apart and packed them with grease but have purchased a new set but waiting for them to arrive from overseas.

    Here's my build sheet.

I did a search for the original rubber bushing part number (823412355) on the 1stvwparts.com site and it shows the 944 Porsche strut mount bushing (pn 94434307100) as a suitable sub. I don't have access to this car or part so if anyone who has a 944 please chime in and let us know if this part is a SS for the early MKI mounts. One a site I looked at it shows the rubber bushing as well as the bearing. I do know that the 944 used alot of the VW parts as my husbands boss uses the MKII Scirocco A Arms on his car since the stock A-Arms for the 944T is $$$

Thanks for the corrections made so you won't have to open each img separately.
I also did the same for the build sheet so part numbers are viewable upon opening thread.

Yes I'm almost certain the A1body style cars (Rabbit,Jetta Caddy and Scirocco) can use the old or new style.

Seems that the car handling and performance was great at the Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) driving event even after getting a check ride to move from Blue with instructor to Blue Solo and spinning several times after hitting turn 10 while was a lake at the time. The instructor says hubby is ready for White group so today he may start out in Blue but move to white.

Now I'm wondering whether I want to hold on to the extra set of sturt mounts (missing one of the top hats) I have. I have two new bearings on the way or it gives me a chance to see if the Porsche 944 rubber bushing/bearing combo will work.

So, what is really the point of this? Is it worth as much as people are paying for these mounts? Why not just buy a pair of brand new Late Style mounts?

I know these are slightly more durable but come on...

    Currently VW-less.

I know these are a crapload more durable

    Fixed that for you.

If you have very stiff suspension, you'll replace the newer style often enough to make investing in a set of the early mounts worth it. Also, if you enjoy driving the car hard, you'll notice a big difference in steering feel with the early style.

  26. 03-01-2009 11:27 PM #26
My new style crap mounts blow out easily every 6 months or so my cabriolet running H&R coilovers. Its bad when you always have to keep 1-2 extra sets on hand to be safe....

And if they go suddenly while driving hard? DANGEROUS. I blew one last summer canyon racing hard. I actually lost control of the car and went offroading with it. Got REALLY Lucky I didn't do any actual damage to the car or myself in that adventure.

Really? I can get a set very cheap like 10 bucks... I didnt think it was worth it for some old mounts and I was going to buy new New Style mounts for about $50.

    Thanks

I went on a search and destroy mission to get a set ready for this past weekend. They worked great and I can't see were the ride height is any different than before (with our setup) and they didn't seem to harsh either when we took it for a test drive. [IMG]

New set of bearings arrived today.. Much cheaper than tearing up a new style mount and finding out the bearings are shot as well.

  33. 03-04-2009 06:15 PM #33
I did this, but luckily the parts were in really good shape. I used Autotech's supposedly 'soft poly'. Unfortunately the car that these went on is a project and have yet to drive. I put another pair on my Cabriolet with the stock rubber 'doughnut'. I wanted to upgrade this set to the Autotech poly as well but I am unable to find on their site. The Autotech part number is 10.412.100BK

    wilm13,

When I ordered my pair from Autotech, they told me they only had one left after my order.

GREAT write-up, much thanks to the OP. I will be using this very soon... Unfortunately, the bearings I have are already on the car, but this will be great to use in the near future...

did I miss a mention of where you sourced the new bearings?
