I'm a fan of military books both fiction and non-fiction and have a profound respect for members of our armed services and especially our elite fighting forces, like the SEALs. Before I even say what this book is about I have to warn you that if you've got a patriotic bone in your body, you will have tears in your eyes by about 3/4's of the way through, like I did.

Lone Survivor is the story of Marcus Luttrell and the three other men of SEAL team 10 who were sent to high up in the Afghan mountains on a surveillance mission where a predominant Taliban leader was reported to be seen along with anywhere from 80-200 Taliban warriors. After detailing the events in his life that lead to this mission, including recounting BUDs & Hell Week, Luttrell tells the true story of how one judgment call cost 3 members of his team their lives after the Taliban was made aware of the team's position high up on the Hindu Kush. Luttrell also explains the story of his rescue, aided by the help of a local Pashtun tribe.

    You should read this if:
    a) You enjoy military related subject matter
    b) You are the least bit Patriotic
    c) You are from Texas (you'll understand after you read this book)
    d) You want to understand the definition of Valor and Bravery.

truly inspiring..........for sure! i was at a bar the other night and i look to my left and there's Marcus. Oh wait, no it was his twin Morgan. HOLY ****. i was so freakin nervous man.

he bought my dinner and my beer. wow. he was truly cool to talk to. these SEALs are such humble guys on the outside but you know inside they are truly badasses.

I really enjoyed his account of the mission and rescue but could've done with a little less Boyah!! and F the liberal press.

First, it's "hooyah*," and second, he has every right to criticize the media's coverage of the war. The mainstream press is clueless when it comes to military operations and their coverage shows.

*What are you expecting from a guy who trained to be a SEAL from a very early age? These extremely motivated, highly talented, type-A personality, killing machines. I'm not sure what you were expecting?

I was expecting what the title stated:

Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10

I was looking for his story on the mission. I really wasn't expecting nor was I looking forward to political musings. In reality, I didn't need 1/3 of the book devoted to the training as I've read enough on it.

I wish it had been more like Black Hawk Down or Band of Brothers which concentrated on the operations and left politics to the politicians.

You're comparing a personal account to two books written by historians...

Also, Ambrose was a hack. Read We Who are Alive and Remain if you want a proper account of Easy Co.

Both of those historians interviewed the participants first hand - sort of like Luttrel's co-writer Patrick Robinson.

All I'm saying that IN MY OPINION, it would've been a better account without all the political barbs. Yes, the mainstream media doesn't understand what it's like in battle - just like in any major war.

I wouldn't take much of Ambrose's work that seriously... he has been accused of plagarism multiple times and took some liberties with the stories found in Band of the Brothers.

HM1 (SEAL) Luttrell is good he has a facebook page and he posts regularly, Morgan is now a LT SEAL. Marcus has a new dog of the same breed. I believe all the punks who killed his dog got prosecuted and the 911 call of him chasing them is on youtube.

Shame, they should have been executed.
