Do any of you guys know if I'm allowed to take the insurance money for my car and take the car back as is? Some people have told me that you could do this. I bet I could sell the car as is for a little over a grand and take the insurance check and make more than I bought the car for. Let me know what you guys think. Pic for reference:

yes you can get the car back but not for free. the insurance company will sell it back to you

the insurance company totals out the car, issues a salvage title for it. and will offer you to buy the car from them. it will be less than what they give you but it depends and you can haggle the hell out of the price if your serious about buying it back because 9 times out of 10 they will just send it to the scrapper for 300 bux. but you will have to tow the car from the shop to your house as soon as you buy it or pay storage fees and all that bull****. then wait for the title.

if i were you i would buy the car back and part it out. depending on the price they give you.

When my land rover was totaled i ALMOST bought it back because it wasn't that bad of shape, but i didn't want to pay to have it towed somewhere while I either parted it out or built some crazy rock crawler.

JPR, the car isn't totaled though. The bluebook in good condition is $5500 and they want to fix it for $4800. I'm talking about taking the car back as is (in working condition), cashing the check, and selling the car on craigslist to someone that wants to repair it. I have the title in my house and I can make more money this way.

I'm just afraid that I'll get the car back and it'll have hella problems in a month or two and then I'm SOL. I should be able to at least make my money back for what I bought the car for.

Ian my jetta was hit a few months ago and its basically the same still have small issue with pulling but that might not have been from the accident. I have state farm and my shop covers all the work for the lifetime you own the car. so i can take it back if there are issues. and its been back once to check alignment and cuz the ac wasnt blowing cold.

also im passing on the rf900 bike cant chance waiting for a title or the trans issue getting costly. possible have a bike ligned up tomorrow in joliet near jjc. its a 1992 Kawasaki ninja 600. been down once with minor scrapes and missing a mirror. the carbs need some cleaning as the leak a little gas but thats easy to be fixed. comes with a helmet and the guy is at $800 bucks. this might be the one. just waiting for pics and to see if can work the price.

      oh ok. well couple things.

when the insurance company cuts a check it will be to a body shop for the repairs not to you. so you will have to talk to the body shop about getting the money and taking the car from them and not having them do any work. the most common thing that happens is people go to body shops and have them jack up the price of the repairs more than it actually costs then cut the customers a check for the difference. its insurance fraud but everybody does it. harder to do with estimators from the insurance company doing the quotes for repairs on the car.

you can ask the insurance company what they will do, depends on the company, some have strict policies about insurance claims and how they handle things others are more laid back.

Picking up the bike tomorrow. 1992 Kawasaki ninja 600 needs some carb work and a mirror. its been down before a slow speed has some minor scratches but for a 19 year old bike what exepcted. has a clean title. and its coming with an HJC helmet size large. hope it fits otherwise ill have to sell it or trade for one that fits. got the whole package for $700. Matas is gunna meet me up and drive it home for me. as is still have to get my permit.

youll shoot your eye out kid

      wait wrong advice...

uhhh.. get a helmet? no your already getting one.

ummmmmmmmm, dont do 150mph then slow down then lock up the back brakes on a bald tire and slide through a T intersection laying the bike down through it laying ontop of the bike while its sliding then doing a flip off the bike onto the shoulder saying TADAAA while your buddy in the 900rr is sitting there laughing his asss off after leaving you down the road doing 170mph+ like you were standing still. Then youll have to call your sister to get her boyfriends truck to come pick up the bike before the cops get there.

The check actually showed up to the bodyshop in both our names so they can't cash it without me signing off on it, and visaversa. I guess they are going to fix it and I'm picking up a rental today... this situation sucks. I'll probably just sell it when I get it back unless its in stellar condition.

I'm actually really interested in finding a white MK4 if anyone sees one. Preferably manual and non-VR6. I'd drive a wagon, 2/4dr Golf, Jetta, just probably not a bug . I found a white TDI Jetta on craigslist with 158k miles but its automatic and the guy wants $7k for it, yeah right!

Let me know if anyone spots anything!

Got my bike and I'm stoked. Matas was a gear help.carbs need to be cleaned. Front tire needs replacement due to ware and dryrot. Forks may need new seals. He said it brakes smooth and shifts good. Rest is general tune up and fluid changes. Plus the helmet fits. Talked him down from the 700 we had agreed on to 550. He had it listed for 900. Think I came out good. Its in good shape for a 19 year old bike. Only 12k on it. Ill get some pics up tomorrow.
