Ugh, I hate those lights even on the Boxster. However, I like the facelift 996 (2002+) more than the 997, though I like the 997TT more than the 996TT - it seems more resolved somehow.

I'll take the risk of hate, but I love the design of the 996. A friend of mines dad has one and I have "driven" that car quite a few times. Maybe the styling isn't the best of all Porsches, but I still love it.

looking at the prices of these things in flebay I gotta admit I'm seriously interested for my next ride.

Where can I find good info on the upkeep and maintenence on these things? There is big potential for me to bank some serious coin in the next couple of months and this could be a great present. Anyone got any info to help?

    Maybe a 996 C4S with a 6-speed. Droooooooollllll!!!!!!

Just gotta block out lovely 3-letter abbreviations like "IMS" and "RMS" out of your mind first, mind you...

The 996 Turbos are bullet proof engines and don't have the IMS/RMS problems. Their engines are derived from the GT1 blocks and I know examples of 996 turbos hitting 200,000 miles from various owners.
    For me it is

    997 Turbo > 996 Turbo > 997 Carreras 4S

For some reason, I've always preferred the earlier 1999-2001 bodystyle to the updated 2002+ version. They just look more elegant to me.

I do as well because I think that the older headlights flow a bit better with the lines of the car and the tail lights look more proportionate to the car as well. Those tail lamps that the 996 Turbos and other Carreras got later on look terrible imo.

I love 911's, but the 996 just doesn't do it for me. I'd take a gt3, but that would probably be it.

    No kidding.

This customer of mine runs coilovers that use Ohlins shocks (with remote reservoirs mounted on the cage).

    Here's my father's old '02 996TT.

I too love the 996, it's presence in motorsport had a big effect on me as a teen. I remember watching first-hand as 996 Turbos, GT2s and GT3s blew away Ferrari 355s and 360s in tarmac rallies etc.

Here's a hellishly loud 996 RS from the Bathurst 24 hour (the event that cemented my love for endurance racing and exotica):

    and at night:

this one still runs in the Australian GT championship:

I have never been able to get over how much I dislike those head lights. I was very pleased when Porsche went back to the "round eyes" design.

I'm exactly the opposite. I LOVE the 996's "fried egg" headlights. I never understood the allure of spending $60,000 - $120,000 and getting the same headlights that look at home on an old Volkswagen. The round headlights made an otherwise expensive car look like they were scraping the bottom of the parts bin when it came to the headlights. At least with the "fried eggs" in 1999 you wouldn't mistake the 996 in the rear view mirror for a VW New Beetle.

A guy I know recently picked up a 996...your basic 1st gen silver Carrera 6 spd. He's not really a car guy and he can be kind of a dick, so I didn't say anything about IMS and RMS issues to him. Just congratulated him on what is in reality a very nice car.

I actually like the plain jane basic C2 looks.

    It sounds good, too.

Has the frequency of IMS failures gotten any worse in the last few years? Is it a "sooner or later" thing or do most make it to 200K with no incident?

Looking at the old pics of the 996 interior, it's pretty ugly. All things considered, the C5 Vette isn't that much worse.

Anyway, I'd looooooooooove to have a 996 Turbo in the near future.

so based on pictures you think it's ugly? have you ever actually driven any generation of Porsche?

the 996 interior was ergonomic light years ahead of all the previous generations of Porsches. for the first time ever the street cars were coming in close to the ergonomics of the race cars. if you don't like the 996 interior then you might as well write off all future Porsches because the cable shifter, gauge cluster, and highly ergonomic interior is here to stay.
