That would be a great idea to do here in Florida. Need something to fend off the love bugs from eating away a the paint. I saw the 1st love bugs today so here they come. Nasty little critters that can ruin a paint job if not removed right away.

Is anyone going to plasti-dip their tiguans- I was thinking about doing the VW symbol and maybe some of the silver trim pieces...

<3 plasti-dip. I did the grill on my Mk5 GTI. Holds up much better than spray paint, especially on the chrome dipped pieces.
#5
This is why I was asking how to remove the chrome on the grill.
#6
periwinkles and i might have to figure out this out this weekend if we have time, ill take some pics if i remember. just plasi dipped some stuff on my gti, came out great.... plasti dip is a winner.
#7
i got you covered. i took the front off this morning. will post pics later. super easy. once you get the grill off. the vw emblem acutaly just twists out.

Periwinkles and I decided to pull apart the grill on the Tig, and Plasti-Dip the chrome front.
1. First there are 3 screws, one by each light and one in the center holding on the grill.(only 3 screws? they aren't trying very hard.)
Light screws. One on each side.

Center Screw
2. After removing the screws, start around the top and gently start to pull the grill out along the chrome trim, there are a few clips that will just pop out as you pull. (be gentle its cheap plastic)
Removed
3.First we take out the VW center. you will see 3 clips, push them in slightly while turning clockwise, if your looking from the back. the emblem should just click and pop out.
4. Now, remove the chrome trim from the black plastic. you don't have to do this, i suppose you could spray the whole piece if you wanted to which is way easier, but i wanted to make it as neat as possible. also it would be easier to fix if it didn't look right. you have some really fragile plastic clips to work with but take your time and work around the trim till it pops off. heres what the clips looked like.

I used 2 butter knifes, and pryed one tab up, while pushing the chrome down, took a while but it works.
Heres what you end up with.
5. we wiped them down real good, got all the bug goo off and dried them well, and laid them out on my newspaper.
6. Plasti Dip away!!!!! 4 coats later....... and reassembled.
![]()
Note: when you paint something, you make it bigger, so when you reassemble be gentle, some things dont slide right back it, but will go in with some pressure. for the most part everything should slide right back into place. The Vw symbol goes in slightly cocked to the left, clicks in then rotates clockwise from the front, back into place.
7. slide back in, replace screws, close hood.
8. Enjoy.![]()

Thanks to Periwinkles for the help, she made the process much easier, and it was nice to do something together as a family.

So that is what plati-dip is. Thanks for the info on how to remove the front grill.Kirk
#13
nope, thats the beauty of plasti dip, works great on non sanded surfaces. if we ever wanna take off the black and put it back to chrome, all we have to do is pull it off and it will be back to shiny new. though if your grill has any dents and dings i would sand them, it Will show up under the plasti-dip. and its rather unsitely.
#14
Looks great, I want to do that as well... Thx for the write-up...Btw, any other color avaiable? Can you also link the plastidip you actually use?
#15
thinking about doing the window trim on my passat
#16
They only have basic colors in the spray cans.... I wanna do the symbols in pink or tie dye lol endo is not really keen on that idea though but it's my tiggy lol I would have pink rims if I could! There is a kit you can buy to mix colors but you can't get bright colors like neons or anything.

I like it!

IDK, the plasti-dipped front end makes the tig look more like a dodge caravan or something.
I don't think it looks bad though. I would probably try it if I weren't worried about breaking something.
#22
dodge? no way... lol. dont be afraid to try it, its not hard at all, and if your scared of breaking something, dont try and separate the pieces, just dip the whole thing, it will come out looking the same, and its only 3 screws, . its soo easy, and chrome is ugly.

I would love it with black moldings, black rails and black headlights. All black!

That is pretty cool. I'm wondering how it would look on my white tig though? Any thoughts?

Black on white always looks good... would match your trim along the bumper, side mirrors, etc...![]()
Plus, plasti-dip does come in other colors![]()

I saw last night just how easy it is to remove the grill as it was done while my remote start/alarm was installed (yippee for that!). So I'm leaning closer and closer but I'm not sure if I'd go with black or maybe even white.
