Thread: power steering fluid flush, coolant flush

    1. 05-31-2009 01:59 PM #1
Hi guys, how often do these need to be done?. (I know the manual says to change brake fluid every 2 years), just curious about the time frame for these 2 as the maintainence schedule just says to check for levels.

      Thanks.

Depending where you live, coolant flush is not a bad idea to do at least twice a year.
Last time I did my coolant flush was 2 years ago at the dealer for their specal rate of 130 bucks....still a lot, but I was to lazy to do it myself, plus they say they put in some special fluid to clean and lubricate the system you know how that goes at the stealership, they probably just drained the coolant and put in a new one

I'm impressed. You managed to keep all your coolant in your car for 2 years?

That's funny... the dealership in my area claims that the coolant lasts a lifetime.

Sorry I didn't quite read your question right. I was at 71k and took my car in to get an oil change (it was cheaper than the price of me buying the oil). They gave me a list of about 6 things that needed to be done. Flush coolant(laughed and said I flushed it 5 times since last summer). Power steering and brake fluid he said I should change. The power steering fluid gets gummy as it breaks down and can cause you to have to replace you steering rack or so he says. Then he tried to get me to do a fuel system cleaning but I don't know about that one I might do something. Then he said my brakes were toast, tires almost legally bald(quoted 200$ a tire went to another place and got 105), two side lights out (35$ to replace ) and an oil leak in my timing chain cover he claims was dripping when it pools over the course of a month in my bell housing then forms one drop that he sees... all told I went in for an oil change and he said about 2000$(atleast) worth of stuff needed to be done. Still haven't gone back. I think i'm gunna get the power steering flush and brake fluid flush and make them drain the extra oil they overfilled my car with just to be an *******

While it might be true, and I don't remember seeing anything in the manual about the coolant flush....but I don't think that any fluid should be in the car for the lifetime.
The reason my dealer had a special on the coolant flush and AC, was because I live in vegas and the tepms get very high...fresh coolant can't hurt the car.

I'm on your side.. I have a hard time believing that it doesn't degrade in some way over the life of the engine.

Coolant and power steering fluid is supposedly lifetime, but my schedule for change is coolant every 40,000 miles or 4 years as it is extended life coolant. I change the power steering in the same interval.

the coolant is "lifetime" but so is the fuel filter. i try to do them both at least 2 a year.

Twice a year? That's just throwing money away.

To change the power steering fluid I take the non-pressurized hose off the PS pump and drain it. I fill it up, run the system for a bit, then drain and fill again.

the fuel filter i defintely change. i dont trust the gas stations around here. and peace of mind
the coolant always seems to just get done that way. motor in, motor out, temp sensor, crack pipe, getting ready to pull the motor again, etc. i dont run the g12, i stick with the green stuff.
