My travel has been through work.

The majority of my travel has been for work. Don't have a lot of pictures from these travels, as a majority of the time I get to sit in office buildings! Given the locations, you could probably guess what industry I am in.

Some out of the way International places:

Mexico: Celaya, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Bustamonte, various border towns
Bonaire
Australia: Sydney, Cairns, island on Great Barrier Reef with a name I can't remember
New Zealand: Auckland, Wellington
Ghana: Accra, Tema, saw Takoradi from a boat
Benin: Cotonou
Togo: Lome (saw from a boat, count?)
Nigeria: Lagos
Thailand: Bangkok (not too random)
Kazakhstan: Almaty, Atyrau (May)

Potentials for the year: Perth, Australia; Angola; London

Various strange US places:

Taft, CA
Terlingua, TX
LA: Galiano, Chacahoula, Erath, Sorrento

When I first started working, I didn't have the funds to hang around some of these locations for more than was paid for.

Now, I have two young children and a full-time working spouse so I feel bad when I leave her for more than a few days at a time. But with some of these places, flights don't always match the work schedule, so sometimes you end up with a day or two on the front/back end to see a little of the city you are in.

Maybe when the kids are older, I will start to tag on a few days to do some of the touristy stuff. I still have 20-25 working years left.

Not much.

The country is nice, the sea is beautifull, the people I met were friendly, (guys only as women were MIA).

I was not in a compound, so three meals a day at the hotel buffet. CNN news on 30 minutes reruns, the rest of the TV channels were either Indian or Arabic music, and it was over ten years ago, so no Internet.

Nothing to do beside work, so you worked harder.

Overall, I'm glad I went. One more life exerience for me.

Oh, and no booze.

What a small world. I have been to Tarfaya back when the Saharoui were still doing the war thing but el Laayoune was too deep in the doo-doo for me to drag a Yank into the mess. 20-odd years later it looks as if I am going back to do a project inland from Dakhla. Some fantastic memories of Tiznit as well. Strangely exotic and attractive place.

Another obscure place I have been is near the tunnel entrance that the Chinese used to supply North Vietnam - many kms inside of the border (SW of Naning). Still very restricted access.

Been to some really middle-of-nowhere oilfields in the Carpaty district of Ukraine as well.

Dragged my wife up to the NW of our own country to see the place where some of the material for the first A bomb was mined. That was so obscure that I doubt more than a few people even know where it is. It was full range, almost no reserve return trip in the Tiger from a fuel stop in Yellowknife.

I guess I kind of end up in a lot of obscure places.

I traveled for a week to Malta before they went to the Euro. I lived it and can't wait to go back. I've also been to Turkey on the south west part by the beach. Flew into Antallia and enjoyed every minute. I was concerned when the passport control laugh very loud when he seen my US passport, but everyone was super friendly. I loved it.

I don't think I've ever been anywhere particularly obscure. The Harz Mountains in Germany overlooking the border and guard towers between East and West Germany prior to reunification could probably be obscure, particularly since that particular bit of scenery doesn't exist anymore.

Bonaire, in the south Caribbean could also be obscure.

Otherwise, it seems I always travel to well-known tourist destinations.

Hawthorne, NV. The town was exactly one square mile (at least years ago when I was there). I stayed and ate at the same hotel/casino in town for two weeks. Walker Lake is nearby but we were advised not to walk barefooted along the shore (because of scorpions). After work we would drive miles and miles exploring the area and we would only turn back in concern of running out of gas. One evening we drove all the way into California, into Yosemite National Park. If you have never been there, also check out Mono Lake and the ghost town at Bodie. Good time
