    Thread: Zillow.com scam?

    1. 06-09-2009 10:42 AM #1
I received this email today through Zillow.com

Hi. My name is Jerome Johnson. I am interested in BUYING the house you have for sale. I am not an Attorney or a Real Estate Agent, I'm an investor. I buy 2 houses a month and I am probably the most serious buyer you will ever come across! As an investor, I can buy the property one of two ways... One is if your price is substantially less than market value. This works for some folks, but it's not for everybody. The second way I will buy is closer to market value on "terms." That means either "Rent To Own," "Subject To," or "Land Contract." There is no Realtor commission when you sell to me... so you can save a lot of money by doing it this way and it's fast and it's safe. If you call me back, I guarantee I'll make you an offer on your house as soon as possible. If you like it, great... your house will be sold. If you decide my offer is not for you... that's no problem. I won't be offended and there will be no hard feelings on my end. If you want to sell your house today, please call me at 732-766-9617 Thanks now.

I did some googling and couldn't find anything like this, so just wondering if anyone here has seen anything like this.

Important to note is that my home is not listed as "for sale" on Zillow.

It's not so much a scam but someone looking to rip you off by buying a home severally under market price or take advantage of someone who is down on their luck.

Doesn't matter. They can look at an entire neighborhood and just blanket the whole thing hoping someone will jump at the opportunity.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Yeah, I know how Zillow works... I have a ridiculous "make me move" price set on there, that is easily $100k over market.

The zestimate is more than I paid for the place 3 years ago, which is nice.

So do you have it for sale or not? I'm just a little confused, probably because I'm not sure how Zillow works exactly.

No my house is not for sale.

But I did receive this response today:

(I replied to his initial mail with "What's your offer."

Well here's what I can do. I can get you the price your asking for, place a tenant buyer into the home, who will pay your monthly amount, relieve you of all household expense they will take care of everything, and you pay me nothing.
      Can I have your business?

So, you asked him to give you a solid offer and he gave you a pretty ambiguous statement - with nothing to back it but his word. Scam, Scam, Scam.

What I like to do is string these guys along, make them think I'm a sucker and just waste their time (since they seem intent on wasting mine).

Me: So what do you get out of that kind of a deal?

      Quote »
I have a list of buyers that I bring to the table that are looking for homes. To make the deal attractive you the seller get to save on realtor fees which in some cases can total between 6-10k depending on the selling price. I get paid by the buyer. Can I have your business?

      (Emphasis mine)
      And then....

Hi Dave, I don't mean to be a pest, but can you give me a contact number so I can speak with you? i can call you sometime this evening if it's OK.

Me: I'm not really interested in any kind of "rent to own" arrangements.

im sorry but if your house isnt for sale, then why the he!! are you even discussing this email? If someone emailed me about my house/cars and I wasnt even trying to sell, I would say F OFF...period.

unless however, your thinking about selling and this email just popped up around the same time the idea was floating in your head

otherwise, my first instinct would be WTF? and chalk it up as spam

I'm a curious person. I want to know the "why" of just about everything.

The "why" of just about everything is the same: to transfer the contents of your wallet to someone else's.

      This is often true.

reminds me of one of my favourite movie quotes; vanilla sky: "what's the answer to 99 out of 100 questions that start with why?" "money."

Same here. One time I even had them send the fake money order to me (at the address of my old apartment which I had just moved out of, but hadn't turned in the mailbox key yet) and shredded it. Then I just kept emailing them telling them I was going to send back some of the "overpayment". I wish I could've seen the look on their faces when nothing happened
