How much does it cost to put on new shocks and struts usually? I already bought the parts. What is the labor usually? How long does it take?

One local VW dealer did one of my cars, and a different local dealer did the other. Each charged about 2.5 to 3 hours labor (around $200). There was a recall going on my Passat Wagon that included a no-charge front alignment at the time, so I figured it was a good time to do springs/dampers. Make sure if you go this route that you discuss and agree ahead of time on price, and you should do fine--I worked with the service managers. Hope this helps.

you'll get the best deal if you install them yourself.

I have ben quoted from $160 to $400 for different shops.
One other thing, if you have a MKIV, your car may not need an alignment after suspension install. Mine did not, these cars are engineered nicely.

Mine had an allignment, install, and front sway install for 365.00
Seemed a little hefty but since that had to drop the subframe for the sway install it was costly

How can I do it myself? It there a list of instructions somewhere? What do I need? Thanks

the rear shocks and springs literally take 15 minutes- The fronts are more complicated but can be done as long as you have the right tools. try this link

160 for a MK4 suspension install...... I would be woried. $300 is about the range you should be in. Plus $70 if you do the front sway (Major pain in the Ass). We get alot of "Can you fix my suspension" jobs in here. Much more worth your time to go to a good, experienced VW shop.... (No Honda tuner shops!)
