I have a 91 cab. and it has the oem steering wheel with the airbag and its big bulky and I wanna get rid of it. Im more versed with mk2's and know earlier mk2s had small spline like mk1 but newer had big spline. Since this car is a 91 does it have a big spline like a mk2? or still mk1 small spline.

    Thanks

Good god, Ron's getting as cryptic as me in his answers.

What he means is the "big" spline is really a sleeve that installs over the small spline. If you remove the sleeve you're left with a small spline. We had a discussion recently in this forum (or the MK2 forum) about how to remove it. VW has a special tool for it.

Hay, hey, cryp your own darn tic will ya??!!
    This is what I meant..........

which pictorially explains what I wrote, that the car in question has both splines, not that it's got the miserable press on sleeve of some other models.

    <edit>
The OP asked only about splines. He didn't (but possibly should have) ask what's involved in air bag system removal.

Follow this thread if you want to swap your MK1 steering wheel, ignition housing and stalks to an MK3 setup:

    http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1438306

I can pass you along the names of the Vortex members from where I got all the parts I needed.

Definitely is well worth the mod:

Nope, the removal perse is easy, 2 allen screws on the side of the steering wheel and a couple of connectors. To disable the light on the dashboard I followed this page:

The double splined column shaft is too long for the turn signal cancelling cam and the horn contacts to work. The double splined shaft needs t get changed out for a single splined shaft, one horn wire needs to be addressed.
Click the link in my sig, scroll down to the air bag section for more details.

Black_cabbie's old car that was used as the model in the stalk swap thread linked above was well known here as the Frankencabby. It was a real mix and match of a variety of different components from apparently random years and models. I KNOW that car either never had air bag components or they had all been removed somewhere along the line.
I KNOW because I shipped him the air bag components from my California market '92 to George in Belgium, he thought U.S. market air bag stuff would make his car more desirable/marketable in his Euro market.
Here's the page I posted for him, detailing the condition of my old stuff prior to shipment.........

Correct, in my case I got the column from a 1987 Cabby (pictured left)

    The ignition housing..

Stalks w/tails and cruise control came from a '98 Jetta 2.0 sans MFA...

It was a little intimidating the install at the beginning...

But if you take your time without rushing, is perfectly doable.

Everything fits perfectly. The horn was not a problem is a single brown/blue wire that color match with the stalks. I just had one wire without using from the stalks which if I remember correctly is green/white and is used for the rear-washer motor.

Thank you for all the responses I really think switching the wheel over will make the steering just a whole lot better with a smaller wheel
