Thread: mk4 notchy shifting!!!! how to fix???!

    1. 06-29-2009 09:42 PM #1
hey, i own a 99.5 mk4 gti vr6, its a 5 sp manual with cables rather then rods. i bought a B&M short throw shifter and it helps a bit but then thing is sooo notchy!! i can hardly get it in 3rd when im reving to 6k
so, what should i do? can i get rods put in? or is there too much work in that?.. give me your ideas!!
i figured this out over the weekend especially, when i was racing my bro with his srt4

Same. 2000 GLX. I told the dealer once when it was under warranty and they lubricated it or something, but the slight improvement didn't last long.

Try new gearbox oil (Motul Gear 300 75w90 is awesome stuff and I use it myself)

But these MK4 gearboxes are known to be pretty notchy, you can realign them if you can figure it out or find the DIY, I did this with mine and it helped a lot along with the new transmission oil, but 2nd and 3rd are still pretty junky... it's mostly the synchro rings that tend to fail.

i feel like it has something to do with cables.. and like Jay-Bee said.. synchro rings.
i own glx also.. but with the mk3 transmission cable set up.. i dont know if your guys' 2000 glx's are cable..
i read somewheres that redline transmission oil is pretty good. T/F?

thanks ohsnappe2 .. ill look into the bushings..

and for VegasGTI, i tried shifting before 6k a few times, and its still a bit of a grind... but heres the thing.. i want to race my car hard and at its peak performance.. 6k-6200 is where i want to shift.. its lead into the next gear very nicely.

      like you?

op you probably need to align your shifter. theres a good diy in the faq but idk how good it would be with your shifter because its geared more towards the oem shifter
