      i hightly doubt that.

he does high rep squats... so 400lbs, say for 10 reps, sounds a lot more realistic than 800lbs for 10.

whenever i watch pumping iron i always wondered if they were using 100lb plates or not. ive never seen a bar bend like at at 405 - and i would imagine mr universe would be able to do reps with 800...

it is definitely strange about the bar, and i wondered about that myself, because you never see bars bending like that now-a-days. though, i still don't believe he can squat 800 for reps, so i'm going to have to assume that they had some ****ty ass bars back then.

to compare, ronnie coleman squats 800 for 2 reps on youtube.

and in powerlifting, an 800lb raw squat is a huge lift. the record isn't much higher than 900lbs.

got a lot of pictures but heres two.
hines ward in the black, and Troy Polumolu in the white. Polumolu is such a ****ing athlete.

Rust/stickiness. At the gym I'm at, we never use collars because it's perpetually humid. The plates all stick and leave this rusty grimy residue.

      Here's some more

And everyone who is asking if they are 100lb plates I don't think so because in pumping Iron Franco is benching 4 plates for reps and the plates look exactly the same.

A lot of the hypertrophy you see in body building is attributed more to high volume in terms of reps than weight. While these guys like Arnold can move a lot of weight, they usually can't compare to power lifters. There is a reason why those guys in the world's strongest man competition look the way they do, which is not like body builders.

Ferrigno competed also (once, 1977), and did okay, but in general, the two paths usually don't cross.

with the new style of training for powerlifting and advances in chemicals.....in the coming years you'll see people doing better at more than one sport. i.e. powerlifting/bb'ing.
