Thread: Engine oil for 2009 TDI motor

    1. 08-14-2009 09:40 AM #1
What is the best engine oil to use in a TDI motor. The manual with my Jetta refers to VW spec engine oil. However I only seem to find that specific oil at VW dealers. Any suggestions on what to use or what oil to look for ?

I also have a 2003 TDI which has run on Mobile 1 since it was new, that is the recommended oil in the manual for that year .

Look at TDIParts.com or BoraParts.com for your VW spec oil (505.01). BoraParts also carries the 507 spec oil.
That that is, is. That that is not, is not.

      Howdy neighbor.

Your 2009 requires 507 rated oil. The 2003 requires at least 505.00 but can use 505.01. VW came up with it's own rating system years ago, using numbers like 505.00, 502.00, etc. To keep buyers options open, they some of their 50X.XX standards were either equivalent or really darn close to the more common API ratings, like CI-4, CI-4 Plus, etc. There's a good write about it on tdiclub.com if you're intereted.

Which M1 were you running in the 2003? As far as I know, the only Mobil products that met the equivalent standards were Delvac 1 and Truck & Turbo Diesel, both of which are 5w40. Rotella T Synthec

Last time I was at Dana, I bought a bottle of Castrol Professional SLX 504/507 5w30 oil for about $8/liter, which is a very reasonable price.

TDIparts.com sells oil change kits, which include 5 liters of the Castrol 507, an oil filter, and a new drain plug for ~$50 plus shipping. You car only requires 4 liters, but it's good to have the extra liter on hand to top up with as necessary. Peter (the owner of TDIparts) also sells Total Quartz Ineo 5w30 504/507 oil.

Worldimpex.com is another good source for parts.

PepBoi now sells the ESP 5W30 Mobil product (meeting 507.00). it's $7/L. You can also find it any some Chrysler and Sprinter dealers.

CASTROL EDGE 5W40 (spec VW 505.01) or 5W30 (spec VW 507.00 for long life) is better......

      This Motor Oil is Super!

I'm pretty sure they don't sell that stuff retail in the states.

The dealerships use that oil however for just about everything they service.

You do need an oil that meets 507.00 standards. Mobil makes one I believe as does Castrol.

Yes, the 2009 comes with "Free" 3yr/36,000 scheduled maintenance, which includes oil changes. But most of us won't let a dealer molest our vehicles.

Dorf: where did you find that M1 5w30? All I can find around here is Castrol SLX from the dealer.

I've seen the M1 ESP 5W40 and Castrol EDGE at my local PepB*ys in NJ. But not the ESP5W30.
