Another question: WHAT SEATS WHERE YOU USING?!!

They're leathers that were an option on, and came out of, a 1997 Jetta GT. Basically regular GL-style seats but with leather.

    awesome trip & write up

in may i drove from nevada to new york alone (other than my cat & dog who were with me)

Sorry to hear- you should've gotten some disposable cameras along the way. Averaging over 1000 per day solo is nuts, I don't think I could do that. Best I did was 800 miles in a day.

I plan to do something similar in my 95 jetta!
since I got laid off and ave no family, bills etc.

Well, there you go. If not now, when? Let me know if you need help planning where to go, what to bring, etc.

    Day 10 May 8

Hoover Dam - (Happy to leave Vegas!)

    Along Rt 66
They had signs with a few words on each sign, every hundred feet or so. So that when you drove by and read each sign, it formed a sentence and then had an advertisement at the end. I guess that's how people entertained themselves while driving back in the day.

    Grand Canyon

I hiked into the Canyon along this trail.

Got to the 3 mile house. It's 3 miles of hiking to this spot, and another 3 miles to the bottom, then another 1.7 (or so) over to the Colorado River. Getting down is the easy part. Try going back up. Tired. Alone. At night. Fun!

The view from halfway down, looking up

    Day 11 May 9

    Bugs!

    Painted Desert National Park, AZ

    Part of old Route 66

LOTS of trains going through New Mexico

    Entering Albuquerque

Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, 2.7 miles above Albuquerque just in time to catch the sunset

Such a cool trip man. Utah is Beautiful.

If you ever come out west again on a similar trip, consider hitting the black hills of western south dakota.

Highway 14a out of spearfish (the spearfish canyon drive) is gorgeous, and so much fun to drive.

Just totally avoid the area the first week in august. That's the Sturgis motorcycle rally, and its a pain to get around.

If any of you are planning road trips out to the black hills, I would be happy to help you out with information.

South Dakota is to come, it was on the way back home: Days 32-35
Lead, Deadwood, Rapid City, Mt. Rushmore, Bear Country, Custer SP, Murdo, Mitchell, Wall, you name it. Speaking of Spearfish, I went to the Wal-Mart off I-90 there. Very helpful photo department when my memory card went bad. The black hills are in my top 5 favorite places and highly recommended.

EPIC! I can't seem to find the motivation to visit a friend in KS. I thought I would take the Jeep out there, but maybe sleeping in the trunk of the Jetta is the way to go! 233K on it and I have no doubt it would get there and back...

    absolutely epic

i took a similar one way style trip like this earlier this year with my buddys greg (aka GREGGO!) and josh (aka Toney Danza). Me and greg volunteered to help josh move from rochester NY to phoenix AZ. Prior to this, the farthest west ive ever been was cleveland OH.

So we rented a penske truck, loaded everything up in it, and headed out. left sunday morning and arrived in phoenix at his new house wed at 9 o clock at night.

40 hours of driving, josh in the penske truck, greg in joshs wifes exterra, and me in joshs lifted durango. it was a hell of a trip! i highly recommend driving and checking out the nations backroads and highways, absolutely breathtaking

Like good music? Then'll you'll love this!

Im almost in tears cause of this.
It is everything ive ever wanted to do for well over 6yrs now. I had plans to go after college but found a great job that wanted me right out of school. Then i was losing my Lisence(9/01/09) in PA therefor losing that job and had plans to go then. (layed out plans, maps, places to go) and now with a baby on the way i fear i will never get to go. most depressing realization i have ever had..
    Props to you sir.
If only I invested my money into something more practical then a VW....
