Yeah, so I've wanted a Mk1 for quite some time, but as we all know, they're not easy to come by anymore, especially in the land of the ice and snow (and salt). A good deal came along, and I knew I had to jump on it or I would regret it. So, my stepdad and I borrowed a trailer and headed down to North Carolina last Saturday to drag it home.

First, we had to pick up the trailer, which meant getting up at 4am and driving to the southern end of Maryland's Eastern Shore (near Ocean City). We got there at around 7:45, but couldn't find the adapters for the trailer lights. So, we had to run to several stores in the area to get the necessary wiring connectors. We didn't hit the road until around 9. Our route took up across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Virginia Beach, then across US 58 to I-95 south.

    The Ocean:

A bunch more driving ensued, and around 3pm we arrived in Fayetteville to pick up the car.

We fastened it to the trailer, only to realize that gas (or the nasty varnish that was probably gas at some point) was pouring out, because the car no longer has a fuel pump on it.

Eventually we got the hose coming out of the tank sealed off by crimping it shut with vise-grips. Then, we hit the road once again.

During the journey down, the wire for the trailer's tail and marker lights came loose from the connector and stopped working. This became a bit of a problem as night fell, so we stopped at a rest area just south of Petersburg, VA to mend it.

Once it was fixed we took off once again, only to find that the lights went out once again near Fredericksburg. So we fixed them again, this time for good, and made it home at just past midnight.

So here are the pics of the car as it sits now:

    Deal with it.

Not sure what is in store for it yet. This much I do know: It will be getting a 2.0 16v with big nasty cams and probably MegaSquirt, since the fuel system is majorly ****ed as it is.
    Deal with it.

    Yeah. I'm sure they do.

To be honest, I was probably a couple of days away from buying the one that you picked up when I saw that you bought it. I was on the fence about it because I already have 4 cars and I don't have much room left. But I really wanted it. So I decided that if a good deal like that came along again I wasn't going to let it pass me by. So after a couple hours of deliberation I decided to pick this one up.

    Deal with it.

Sweet! Doesn't look too bad from the pics, that rare beast, a mk1 rusting from the top down.... was it parked on its roof?

Always good to see another Mk1 being saved from terminal entropy. Have fun with the restore and especially the driving after; Mk1's are great!!

Haven't touched it, other than pulling the cold start valve and thermo-time switch off to use on the 88.

Oh, and I've bought a head for the engine I'm going to be putting together for it.

    Deal with it.

I've been gathering some parts together lately.

Ported 16v head with Schrick 268 cams, etc...

    Audi 3A bottom end...

    Some NOS goodies...

And I got a duckbill for the front (not pictured).

    Deal with it.
