I came across this and I've never seen one before. The ad claims that is a rare factory Trans Am kit. It could just as easily be some body kit that was added sometime in the last 32 years, but still it's pretty rare to see a '77 Scirocco with 12,000 miles.

Larry do you know anything about these?

Here's a link to the ad:

I'm not sure if that looks good.... the car would be sweet if that kit was taken off.

    Looks like it.

But it may be like the IMSA 1st gen RX7 kit- meaning it was easy to get the parts and swap them on any 1st gen RX7.

    Here's all I got.

I always just thought some AMT designer was all smoked up and thought, "Hey, I know. Let's put some Beetle fenders on a Scirocco!"

Next edit by onebadbug; tomorrow at 10:13 AM.

What you get isn't always what you see.

A quick search of Google revealed nothing about that being a factory spec'ed kit, seems a few dealerships fitted cars with them but nothing about a factory option.

Funny I had the model but it was the green and silver race version.

Like most of the other crap at Country Classics. It's par for the course down there in Staunton. 've been down and walked their lot numerous times in the past decade. There are honestly a good few dozen vehicles that are sitting down there for sale, that have been sitting for sale for at least 5-6 years. With the same absurdly high prices slapped on them to boot. Rotting hulks of vehicles. They really aren't the place to go to buy something decent.... My .02.

Yup...price is/was nuts IIRC....but if I had the scratch I'd buy it and put some wider wheels on it.

$8500 doesn't seem so bad for that pristine, non-cracked dashboard alone

Yeah its ugly, but its based on a REAL race car and could be made into a REAL race quite easily.

As the Trans-Am racer it looked fantastic. This one, though, just has the sad appearance of a Scirocco with a thyroid problem. Ick.

It could be a factory made kit available .
Just like you could order the VW New Beetle cup kit from VW Motorsports for a hefty penny.

The bigest problem with this car (other than the absurd pricetag) is that the rear flares don't really line up properly, and the wheels need to be much larger to fill the extra-large fenders. And it has the standard bumpers still, rather than the no-bumpers of the actual race cars. And it's completely stock other than the bodykit. If it had some performance upgrades (both engine and suspension) and wheels to fit the part, it would be pretty cool.

And this thing has been posted in the Scirocco forum dozens of times in the 5 or so years it's been for sale at that place.
    Deal with it.

I wish I could show all the photos I shot of the Trans Am Sciroccos up above that I took at Watkins Glen at the Six Hour Enduro Event in 1976. The cars were incredibly well-prepared and beautiful to behold; many fans in the paddock walked right past the BMW CSLs and Porsche 935s to see the Sciroccos (there were 2 of them entered in the under 2-litre class), and since I was a fanatical owner of a new '76 Scirocco myself, you can imagine my enthusiasm for them.

But, unfortunately my photos are all slides, and I don't have the facility to convert them for the computer. I hope someday to get the conversion hardware, and then, look out, because I took thousands of racetrack photos in the seventies and eighties, and there are some damned good ones amongst them.

It's too bad you don't live in Illinois anymore because I have a buddy in Chicago who would convert your cool old car stuff for free. He has the equipment and is a German car nut.
