Can't help you but a flashing CEL usually means STOP driving immediately, probably something to do with why it eventually cut your throttle in effort to save the engine.

So I was driving home from H2O along the interstate in Virginia when my CEL starting flashing. I didn't notice any changes in performance at all. Pulled off at the next exit into a gas station to look things over. Everything appeared to be normal, I couldn't find anything that had come unplugged or anything. I got back in and started the car, it started fine and was at a smooth idle. However, when I pressed down on the gas NOTHING happened... no throttle response at all. The CEL was still flashing as it had been.I attempted to reset things (disconnected the battery for about 20 min) to no avail. The CEL continued flashing and I could not access the APR software (in an attempt to possibly reset that). Again, until I turned the car off, it was accelerating and running perfectly even while the CEL was flashing...
Scanned it for codes this morning and there were no stored codes... yet the CEL continues to flash as soon as the key is turned on. The scanner was just a cheap kind and I know vag-com would tell more but the problem is I had to leave the car at my gf's parents in MD and borrow a car to get back to TN for work...
Anyone had an issue like this or have any idea what it might be??

It's your apr antitheft, it can be accidentally enabled while driving without hitting the exact buttons to do so.Has happened to me, my mother, and atleast a person or few on golfmkv.com
put in your security code to unlock it.

A flashing CEL is a severe misfire detector. Its actually trying to save your cat as unburnt fuel in a converter will quickly melt it. I have no experience with APR software, but that is probably the problem as your car would still operate with the flashing cel from a misfire.

Holy crap, it was the anti-theftGot it re-flashed back in the spring and had some features added and had never got around to playing with it. Had I only known... thanks for the help, saved a nice diagnostic bill!

apparently you can accidentally engage it?![]()
I'm not sure, the cruise control was on, in order to activate it officially you have to hit the "resume" and "set" a certain number of times in sequence and if you don't press them within 1.5 secs of each other it starts over to "prevent false sequence recognition" per the APR manual... hmmm...

When it went on for me while driving i had just fiddled with the cruise stalk a little bit, it definitely was not the sequence for the code.Back in early august my mother had called me up one day stranded in her apr flashed mkv. She had the flashing cel and couldn't go anywhere, instructed her on how to do the unlock and it ran fine for her.
Then there was this thread the other day on golfmkv.com

Quote » I'm stuck at a rest area... Had been driving about 60 miles when the light started flashing. Pulled off and shut the car down. Checked for anything obvious, saw nothing. Started the engine and had no throttle whatsoever. Engine was running fine before I shut it down.
The antitheft will activate without the exact sequence while driving.

Car drives fine but with flashing cel till it's shut off. Then on restart cel flashes and car will only idle.

happened to me. it was an oh sh*t moment - first thing i thought was i burnt up my cat because of some fuel cleaner i put in.i was cruising on the interstate, using cruise control. instead of accelerating with the pedal i just clicked the + accel on the cruise several times and then once on the - decel side. flashing came on immediately. I don't think the 1.5 sec holds up for the anti theft feature.
this has happened to a few people and has cost them some dough after having the car towed for repair. I hope you didn't have to do that.

no thankfully didn't have to pay to have the car towed, had a friend with a trailer to come haul it from the gas station in the middle of nowhere to their house 1.5 hrs away... Just a bunch of extra fuel costs. I'm definitely going to be discussing the issue with APR when I head down for the BBQ in a couple weeks...
