I think that there are enough MK1's out there to have their own thread on here now. What have you been doing to your MK1 - have you added any new bits lately etc??
I think a MK1 meet up would not be out of the question also.

I'll start, today I charged my ever depleting battery!

Just realised I've owned my mk1 for 11 years . . . wow.
I'm a country member.

I had 3 mk1 golfs. They were a top cheap car. Had a white 4 door, orange 2 door with spotties on the front bumper. Last one I had was a gucci yellow 4 door and the best, it was stolen for a joyride and burnt out up at terry hills.![]()
Had a mk2 as well, was a better car. I'd love another nice mk1.
A red one with 2 doors.
#6
Can I talk Mk2 in here also? We've had ongoing idle issues with ours for months and months. After replacing loads of **** it turned out the MAF was toasted. Replacing that made it pretty good for a while (and it runs sweeter than ever)Now it idles properly sometimes, but other times it revs up and down all the time... Strangely, switching on the a/c will instantly fix it. Mental.

Anyone got reference for the fuel pump fuse?![]()

I just got me my second MK1. I have a silver 4 door and now a red 2 door. I love MK1's

Just read that PDF, but as it's for a later model the layout is a bit different (see below).
No joy on the owner's manual I'm afraid. MOTs, plenty, but no manual.

I don't think our Tasmanian friend is interested in selling anymore - unless you have seen evidence to suggest otherwise? How much do you think that car is worth anyway? I would gut it and put a cage in cos I would be too nervous driving that thing at hill climbs etc.

most of em have a dodgy idle. switching off my a/c seems to fix it, lol. so many things that can cause it, pain in the ass. could be a vacuum leak somewhere. is the vacuum reservoir connected? it's a weird round shaped thing in the fender on the battery side, there's a light green vacuum hose that runs to it. i've got the front of my car off at the moment and just noticed that it's not connected. the hose has broken off and someones put a screw in the end of it. yet to connect it back up and see if it helps at all. will let you know if it works.

Even the non-A/C K-Jets suffer from this, Tim. Vacuum hose going to inlet manifold seems to be source.
#20
thanks lads, I'll point my brother at this thread as he's in Sydney doing the work, but a lot of what he's talked about in terms of what it could be has been vacuum related also. There seems to be no real way to do a "vacuum test" though, so I guess the only way to troubleshoot is to replace parts haha
#21
hahhaha you loved your MKI.......it was funny to see you quite excited about how it drove.old stuff is so cheap in the UK..........

I did put it a couple of more threads down and still have a good 1.5" left in the coils but I don't think I will be able to hit it that low

So do I have to take the side fender off to get to this? Or is it easier to take the wheel off and the wheel lining out and go in that way?
I have always wondered what that green hose did!
Cheers
#31
hey. is yours not connected too?
i've got the front bumper off atm, so i got at it from the front. it sits directly under the battery. you might be able to get your arm at it from underneath. i'll have a look tomorrow. here's a pic of someones car, it's in that fender cavity in the bottom right hand corner. http://i20.photobucket.com/alb...8.jpg

I recently added a turbo to my 76 mk1 8v as I was bored & for the sake of it
Doesn't go too bad on low setting's & stupid on high, but its a temperamental old mole on high!
Converted it all in under 2 weeks.

Not to be left out....I had a Mk1 golf once, an 'L' with a stonking 1.1 donk, 4 speed, no rev counter, vinyl seats, crap brakes, plenty of rust, and a shiite snot green colour. It would barely get to 120 with a tail wind.
The best think about it is if I recall early the courtship exploits that it facilitated. It was only 25 years ago when I was 16.....
How did I get this old? why am I still driving a golf?
#35
go the turbo'd 8v. just read through your thread, well documented.![]()
