some of this business comes from guys who run 16V race spec motors in those speed way type of wheelies......

*sniff sniff*........did I just smell 200hp@wheels worked head in the christmass wish list?

Must be scary when 25% of his business income comes from a handful of MK1 owners!

    I'd say it's closer to 5%.

theres enough poor engineering in VW's to keep him going with the newer stuff........e.g alloy sump MKIV's and O2O gboxes on transports to name a few.

Will some questions if I may...
    - are you driving the 16V often?
    - are you planning on taking it to the 1/4?
    - is it Digi or K-jet?

    very often....heaps on wkends.

no because to get a serious time i'd be blowing boxes and have done so in the past. 020 boxes are the worst and it's the last thing i need atm. enjoy tracking it more. not going nuts i don't think it'll be much quicker than a 14.5's anyhow. it's a brick at the end of the day.

    it's running a WOLD3D V4 atm.

    barp barp.

gotta take a pic of the next jdm exhaust and show you guys

Just interested in finding out more about the 16V and am learning bits about them as I go. Really asking those questions for drivability, performance and tuning.

Engine looks great, I am assuming it now looks like a normal dusty MK1 donk?

What sort of fuel delivery do you have? Submerged pump to a reservoir then an inline pump? Do you get fuel surge on the track?

(is that one of the wheels on ebay in the background? )

    yup dirty as now.

yeh inline pump. no i've never had fuel surge.

with anything reliability is all about set up and the gear you have. I dare say about 90% of the gear in the engine bay is new or newish so it plays up usually it's a loose bolt or something like that because I run solid mounts you need to tighten things up now and then .

if your thinking about motor options I'd go 16V. you get a better power band to play with at high speeds. The 8V's run out of steam after 80-90km/hr.

all depend on budget I guess and how much time you

more than happy to give you a ride if you like.

    share the love .

I'd love to have a ride Will - always interesting to compare different set-ups to each other.

Where are the pics of your new exhaust? You must have a gallery somewhere that I can poke around and check out the details.

How do you cope with the vibration from the solid mounts?

    It's been sold already.

Apparently it has been listed on the site for a few years and just last week he sold it to a guy in Melbourne.

thats a must do..........best option for n/a or boost.

mines a stocka and can keep up with a 180sx on boost.

but be prepared.......it won't be cheap all up.

    2K motor
1.2K ecu (if you want to go that way)
800 exhaust mani and maybe full exhaust
    170 radiator
    500 tuning
    400 clutch n flywheel

hang on a sec.............thats the cost of one of Liams S3 mags

I think daily driver duties are certainly possible.

But you may find you'll need to sort a few gremlins out first, depending on the example you find and the work that's been done on it.

Mine will start, but it usually takes equal doses of pot luck and bashing/jiggling of the fuse box to get the fuel pump into life. Once the fuel pump is working then it just takes a few minutes to get it fired up if starting from cold.

I spose I need to take mine to an Auto Electrician to get the fuse box seen to. Any recommendations from the locals?

Floody - speaking old skool in general (pretty safe bet Old Golfs are like old Escorts) tread carefully!

    - they need maintenance and care vs. the annual service
    - they overheat in peakhour
    - they are less comfortable

AND they choose the worse time to break down...

They are really reliable as long as you maintain what could go wrong will go wrong rule of thumb.

I bought the Mrs the Mk1 to drive back and forth home to work/ shops 80kms a day with out a problem.

the only electrical problem was the alternator died on us once but nothing else happened

As long as you have a Mk1 thats been maintained it can easily be a great daily driver.
