No Mk1 GTIs (or 3drs?) were ever made in, or officially imported to, Australia.3dr Mk1s are a bit easier to come by (although still tricky to find good ones), so perhaps they were made here, not sure ... someone will know.
So, yeah, it’s personal import. Looks like there may have been two owners in the UK. I have MOTs for all but two years from the period of first delivery to 1996 when it came to Australia and was promptly sold. The first registered owner here had it until around 2006 (apparently for the bulk of that time the car sat in a garage). Around 3 years ago Matt from Camden GTI bought the car and got it back into its current shape. It was off the road for at least a year getting an outer respray. I picked it up about 6 weeks ago.
The odometer isn’t working at the moment, haha, and the mileage is at 94500. Assuming all the paperwork with the car is legit the mileage can’t be out by any more than 500 miles.
