No Mk1 GTIs (or 3drs?) were ever made in, or officially imported to, Australia.3dr Mk1s are a bit easier to come by (although still tricky to find good ones), so perhaps they were made here, not sure ... someone will know.
So, yeah, it’s personal import. Looks like there may have been two owners in the UK. I have MOTs for all but two years from the period of first delivery to 1996 when it came to Australia and was promptly sold. The first registered owner here had it until around 2006 (apparently for the bulk of that time the car sat in a garage). Around 3 years ago Matt from Camden GTI bought the car and got it back into its current shape. It was off the road for at least a year getting an outer respray. I picked it up about 6 weeks ago.
The odometer isn’t working at the moment, haha, and the mileage is at 94500. Assuming all the paperwork with the car is legit the mileage can’t be out by any more than 500 miles.

to be honest I have looked a few times at mk1/mk2 online sales now since you got this one.
I miss old sihtboxes sometimes.
I think lots of the mk1 3 doors were made here? AA003 will know.
I drove my mk2 out to his place once, he has lots of old stuff and it is all put away neat and tidy
good stuff.I'd love a orange 3 door ls or whatever they are. never cared that much about them then, just liked them as they were cheap as and thrashable.
One mate bought colts, I went for golfs

3 doors were made here in '76 and imported by LNC '77-'79.
To fit the red surround, you will need a genuine grille.
The GTI inner lights with the square Hella logo are very hard to get.
Liam, I've got genuine workshop manuals here if you need anything copied.
Your odometer should be any easy fix, just go to an instrument maker. I've had them done before.

You don't really need three phase for an air compressor
Single should be fine - my dad has been doing it that way for 20 years.

I thought the 3 phase make more power, but draw less current? I don't know much about it really.
Just curious as to how much power they chomp up. I'm sure a single phase makes enough power, def for air tools.

I'm positive there''s "enthusiasts" all over the country with 3 phase compressors ín their home garages.. i may have had one at some stage.. haha but Tim's right a decent single phase one will do anything at home.
I dont know what the power usage is but i know air tools arent as efficient as electric/cordless tool by a fair margin for whatever thats's worth but given its infrequent use at home you'd only turn it on as you need to for workin on the car and stuff im sure you'd barely notice the power use.

If it's 2kw, it's 2kw. That's how you pay for power. It doesn't matter if it's 1 or 3 phase.

that is high if in that range. I track my car and it only gets to 110.

Yeah, but l337 Mk1s have oil coolers, big fat Mk2's don't ... AFAIK anyway.
But then your engine isn't exactly OEM, so dunno if you have the oil cooler anyway.
I still haven't done a Brindy run in the Mk1, but even when I've been fanging it as hard as I dare the oil temp has been struggling to make 90° (all based on the assumption my gauge is working accurately, haha).

Golf 2s have a watercooled heat exchanger oil cooler. The same as T3 transporters. Not as good at cooling as the Beetle cooler of the Golf 1.

I am not sure they will fit. I took out the old ones from my MkII and replaced them with 4x6, which was the exact same size. Are you sure 3x5 wasnt just MkI. Mine is an early MkII.

Well given it says they are for a MkII on the box, and they were sold by the importer that imported my car, it doesn't matter much in this case

So 'Green 16' arrived yesterday from Brisbane.
Pretty happy with it as it was bought sight unseen, quite a bit of work to do, but nothing major in any manner.
In a few weeks after some works - new cat back exhaust system and rego - it is time for a pre summer meet. I am not sure if I would be keen enough for taking a car that I have only had a short time on the track, but would consider most other things.
