That's my plan with the GTI.

But Mick may be looking for a new motor, although I'd say he's probably already hatched a plan.

Maroubra Rd, near Anzac Pde. Don't know what is there now, some decades since I lived in the area. They were VW and Subaru dealers, IIRC

I have hatched a plan - but spoke to Arno first mind you in case there was a bargain to be had at his place!

So here is a lazy cross post - but you know you all love it (especially for WAY here with all the pics of his seats)...

Seems like I keep going around in circles, but every time I pull it apart it goes back together better than the time before. All the details are coming together nicely...

RHS hub has been sorted and refitted. Situation is, the stance is spot on now...

And more of the interior. Door cards were fitted up and along with some fettling on the parts that all seem to use different standards despite all stating they fit a MK1 - door hardware on as well.

Timing is everything when it comes to such things. Doing my due diligence you might say - but UK cars, can-o-worms!

Is that yours? My missus would never let me buy a Mk1 unless it is fully caged to FIA standards as she sees them as death trap (because I will only be using them for track and tarmac events if I ever get one).

meh! your lovely spouse worries too much. Just remind her that most cars are death traps when used correctly. Also, you should point out to her that as a cuddly white collar exec approaching 40, you stand a monumentally higher chance of dying of a heart attack than dying in a car.

Although,.. here's a question? Are you going to instal a cage? And then raise the seat harness anchor points? without a cage to prevent roof crumple on roll overs, the person is held up right in the harness, and suffers head injury or death by the fact their head is used as a tent pole as the car crumples around them. Also, there was a rule that the angle of the harness strap couldn't be more than a certain number of degrees from horizontal. the theory being that a sharp angle increased the vertical pull down on the harness under braking or impact. It therefore increased spinal injury by compression.

The rules may have changed since I built my datto 1600 in the early 1990s, however it might be worth investigating....

great looking little car tho! really tops!!

I forgot to add. If you ask Matty, he will tell you that those Porsche logo on the seats are worth $5k, each.

Yeah, it is a question that needed to be asked. It all complies as it is with standards (4 points to existing anchorages, compliant release buckle etc) and has DOT approval and will pass registration.

The real thing as you point out are the angles. If this were a track car I would not run this setup. As a road going car it will hopefully not end up being in a situation that requires the testing of the roof integrity, for that I am willing to take the risk.

It is all show and no go at the moment as the asthmatic 1.6 on a weber with 4 speed certainly is not living up to the spec of the interior. However that should change , and if all being fair, probably still take 6-9 months to get the 2080cc ABF 16v in there on ITBS. You'll hear the induction noise in K-Town I'd say!

    1) cool, cool.
    2) old skool howling atmo in the mountains. I like this idea.
    3) You would have liked my Pug S16 when it was completely finished; the immense howl at 7500rpm was deliciously mental!
    4) Go the ABF for the mk1 !

Today, I think I found the rarest NOS MK1/MK2 part in Australia.

Pop out rear side windows - Fully intact in original packaging!

    Some progress on Liam's GTI.

Got some decent shots of this gear before it is bolted back on I thought was deserved.

The fuel system must have been going fine originally, but over time looks like the corrosion has taken a firm grip on what to some suspicion looks to be an original accumulator and fuel lines.

The replacement specified is a Porsche/Volvo unit (the barb is for venting back into the fuel system in an emissions control environment) - fits nifty in the bracket.

The pump has been tested and is operating as new. The return check valve however was not closing and this is the most likely cause of the hard start cases that have been seen. New check valve fitted.

Idle Air Bypass was not looking like this before. Cleaned and re-calibrated.

The WUR that was fitted was not for Golf and was actually a vacuum model (from Turbo cars) and hence was not delivering the correct pressure (3 as opposed to 3.5 BAR) which in turn was not assisting in the AF ratio - this is a rebuilt unit with the correct resistor etc and hopefully this will bring the over fuelling in check.

All of the injectors were gunged up and not spraying correctly. They cleaned up alright and a lot cheaper than buying new (best is they are still steel as opposed to the new ones that are brass)

And the throttle. It was so gooped up and poorly adjusted the butterflies were not closing correctly, which is why the idle forever was inconsistent. That should be golden now.

Waiting for a massive haul from MK1 Autohaus with new braided fuel hoses and a number of other bits - so all in all things are certainly on the improve and this car will run as good as new with everything being replaced or refurbed!

A well deserved plug here too.

Nice work on both your and Lima's cars Mick!

Not sure what it is, but the rear seats are my favorite bit of the whole interior.

Well at least I have one person that thinks so at the moment!

This is how I have managed to get Liam's k-jet running, the best that it will ever be I reckon.

Cheers for the update. Sounds great.

I need to address those tips at some stage too.

Dumb question??? Do we need to be concerned about the smoke, or is that a K-jet "feature".

    Any luck with Alex?
