Damn. What kind of maintenance initially will have to be performed to get it running, when stuff sits for a long time you could have potentially more problems right?

I saw this in the classifieds and clicked the ebay link. I didn't think such a thing would exist!! I hope it goes to a good home.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...f355e

The things that complete your life doesn't necessarily complete others.

Damn. Assuming I could drive it home, I'd double the mileage getting it here!I would imagine it will go for more than $5100.00, though.

Thoughts expressed are those of the poster and not those of some long dead guy who I choose to speak for me.

but do you drive it then? low low miles are overated.

Absolutely. Change all fluids, including brake fluid. Test brakes (press pedal as hard as you can for extended period) for leaks/failures, do tune up, drive home and pray you make it.

That would be a shame, considering it is in such original condition. Not gonna lie though i would re-work the suspension and keep the original parts if i ever wanted to go back to original. But other than that i would keep it as is!

yeah, I'm prepared to go higher...not sure how much this one should be driven, hate to say it, but it should be preserved, with exercise miles only.

I'd love to hear from someone who has actually done it. I think this is mostly a myth. My guess is that you could change the fluids and go have fun.

Beautiful and one-of-a-kind...I'm going to guess the final price ends up somewhere in the $10K range. Fortunately when you talk about ones in this condition, and at price points that get up that high (relative to what a more typical example would sell for), your buyers generally end up being actual enthusiasts who have a love for the vehicle as it sits, rather than some kid who is interested in hacking it up...more like 40-year-old guys who had one of these in high school and have fond memories of it.

I would think that it will go for $18-20k if the right buyer(Leno-type) appears.

Whats the point of buying something thats meant to be driven and not drive it?Buy a GTI for 500 bucks with 200k miles on it and have fun with it.
Why buy a car for 10k thats worth 1k dollars?

I will be bidding!!!

I was thinking that it would gor fro around 6-7k before I clicked on the link. But seeing that it is already at $5600 with 6 days left I think ~10k will be the final price.
What a great car. I really hope it goes to a correct home

I'm sort of at a loss as to why this is a desirable item other than of the novelty of it's low mileage. It's not like it's a rare car. This is essentially like finding an 82 prelude with the same amount of miles. They aren't rare and at the end of the day, it's a Volkswagen, not a 356A. Sure it's in great shape but if you plan on keeping the only saving grace about it (the low miles), you can't drive it and anyone who spends more than 5k on it to just let it sit is an idiot.
And if you buy it mainly for it being in great, pristine shape, there are several (much better) examples in the classifieds already, at half the price and are ready to be enjoyed and actually driven.

I sense someone, whoever buys this will have instant buyers remorse. You know when the thing arrives at your house all clean and what not. You will look at your pride and joy and just be super happy.
Then the thing gets unloaded off the flatbed, then you relise the only way to keep it in this shape is if infact you buy the flat bed so you can drive it to shows ect to show off your low mileage economy sport hatchback.
Different strokes for different folks.

When is the last time you saw an '82 prelude? It has been a while, for me.
The same thing can be said about countless cars of american descent who found their ways into people's hearts and are now sought-after classic. What, are cars built after 1980 never going to go that route?

Man I would LOVE to own that thing, but i would feel like a jerk for putting more miles on it.

Well these were more numerous than this and they command decent prices(restored examples I'm sure) and are still going up every year. Even later(more numerous) models I see somtimes command in the high teens, especially in this condition. The GTI is, to certain people like myself, just as big an icon as the Beetle. They will eventually get there as long as someone will pay it. Never for mine unfortunately, but for original, clean examples.
If we all recall this delightful, popcorn munching, bagel infused thread, the example therein went for $5800 at 31000 miles.

it really depends on what you want it for. I love a beat rabbit to beat on just as much as the next guy, but this is something very different, People spend year searching all over to restore old cars that have meaning to them to factory specs..
if this is really what is being described, its worth every penny and then some in my book.
