Thread: Help! Hood wont close after jetta front end swap

    1. 10-14-2009 01:23 PM #1
So i swapped front ends with a Jetta and for some odd reason i am not able to close my hood now. It wont completely latch and i have no clue why.
I know the fenders and hood are aligned properly. Well at least i think so everything matches up really well but close the hood and it wont fully latch. Gti hood would close and latch no problems, but this jetta hood is giving me problems. Please help.

It's your car saying, "remove these damn eyelids, or i will fling the hood up at the windshield while you are going 70 on the interstate."

Will the hood latch on the first hood catch, but then you can not get it to lock? Try raising the hood latch assembly.

Yes it will latch just not lock and i have messed around with the assembly numerous times still no luck. I also think the headlights might be the problem but then again i dont know because it would not lock when they where off.

why don't you just test it. take a bolt and push it down to see if it locks.

Ill try that first once i can get a chance. If it locks though how will i get it to lock the actual hood down

well if you latch is working then something is off. how is the fitment of your front quarter panels? Go over all the panels you put on making sure everything looks right. Also make sure nothing is in the way of the hood going down all the way. Also check the gaps between your side of your hood and the fenders there should be that 1/2 gap all the way down if not then the panels are on incorrectly

I have never swapped out front ends but I don't think anything was different on the latch assemblies throughout the years with mk4's but someone may know something I don't. But I would measure and take a look at your old hood just to be safe. Otherwise try raising the latch assembly a little more and that may do it

Also take those eyelids out it just ruins it.

have you tried slamming it? My latch is just internally rusty and stuck and you really have to give it a slam when closing it.

same thing happened to me when i changed out my radiator support, you just need to adjust the latch, it might take a few tries but im sure thats the problem.

I have no input but when you do this swap do you need to swap rad support also? If not then maybe just need to adjust latch or hood hight adjustments at the nose of the hood, i dont have any so im not sure if they are supposed to be there or not.
