i will be in anchorage/ ft richardson in december, bringing a bmw and volvo. besides getting some studded snow tires what did you do to your car for the winter?

You have to "winterize" it which means install a block heater, battery heater/charger and an oil pan heater. It's all very simple to put on., then you'll have a plug sticking out the front bumper, plug that in at night and it'll start in the morning. (this is the interior, not sure if Anchorage is as severe)

I drove from Raleigh, NC to Anchorage. It was awesome. My biggest regret was that I didn't bring a lic plate for the "forest".

Great Story, I wish I had enough vacation time to make one epic roadtrip.

What are some other great northern routes through Canada? I would love to throw studs on my Jeep and take a January trip north from Montreal and see how far up I can get.

Awesome thread and pics. Sadly, not all are showing up, as you're running out of Photobucket bandwidth... Try and host them somewhere else.

Is this who I bought the car from?! Dude! He was the original owner for 9 years to.

No, I sold my car last year and that owner in turn just sold it (it's been in Wisconsin) It still only has ~70k on the odometer. I'm sure my old girl would've loved a trip like that though.

I spotted this thread crosslinked elsewhere. Awesome journey.
My own sube is a 1987 from alaska, now in maine, with a burnt southwestern shadow under the old roof rack. True stories are rather hair raising,...it is still a daily driver with not a single major repair. I joked at first of guinness book of world records, now, going on 25 years, it is not so funny.

I like to find the last integrities and solid states showing its realities. Way to go. I could assume 2 liter, no bs with the cyl heads.

    to a moderator:
is there a legit share button for this thread, or do I just give a link?

has this car ever been redone in the engine someplace? the drivetrain has me interested.

I've been visiting VWV/TCL for something like 9 or 10 years now. Every day I see more of the same lowerit/coolstorybro/omgblueFJpic/yourcarsucks nonsense and wonder why I bother. But every once in a while a post comes along that makes me think "AAAaahhhh that's why..." And this is one of those posts.

I did something similar about a year and a half ago.

Pensacola, Florida to Point Mugu, California...

You probably passed right by Mugu... It's kind of at the end of the PCH by big rock (desolate looking Navy base).

I used to go to the same look out as Wimblebot all of the time, too!

Man, I wish I had spent my trip doing it like this rather than rushing to get to California...

Congratulations on the trip and I can't think of a better (legal) way to end your civilian life! I made the trip from Dallas to L.A. in an '03 GTI packed with everything I own in it and I made it a point to go out of my way to see every interesting thing on the way. I probably shouldn't mention that I was alone and my dl was suspended, but that just makes it more fun! I hope to go on more trips like these and I'll try to document my journeys as well as you have, but for some reason I never seem to have a camera when I really need one. Oh well! I award you one internet, two thumbs up, and if we ever cross paths, you got a beer comin'!
Where have you gone, Juniper Monkeys? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. (Woo woo woo)
