The best scene of the whole series was when Snoop is buying the nailgun and talking with the salesman. Then she hands him $800 in cash and walks out of the store. Snoop was a brilliant character... probably the most creepily evil female on TV ever.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE-uY7P3pe4

Though, that show rocked right from the opening scene.

Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: So your boy's name was what?
    Kid: Snot.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Called the guy "Snot"?
    Kid: Snot Boogie.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: God. Snot Boogie. He like the name?
    Kid: What?
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Snot Boogie?
    [the kid does not answer]
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: This kid, whose mama went to the trouble to christen him Omar Isaiah Betts... You know, he forgets his jacket, his nose starts running and some *******, instead of giving him a Kleenex, he calls him "Snot". So he's Snot forever. Doesn't seem fair.
Kid: Life just be that way, I guess.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: So, who shot Snot?
Kid: I ain't goin' to no court... Motha****a didn't have to put no cap in him though.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Definitely not.
Kid: He coulda just whooped his ass like we always whoop his ass.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: I agree with you.
Kid: He killed Snot. Snot been doing the same **** since I don't know how long. You don't kill a man over some bull****. I'm sayin', every Friday night in an alley behind the Cut Rate, we rollin' bones, you know? I mean all them boys, we roll till late.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Alley crap game, right?
Kid: Like every time, Snot, he'd fade a few shooters, play it out till the pot's deep. Snatch and run.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: What, every time?
    Kid: Couldn't help hisself.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Let me understand. Every Friday night, you and your boys are shootin? crap, right? And every Friday night, your pal Snot Boogie... he'd wait till there's cash on the ground and he'd grab it and run away? You let him do that?
Kid: We'd catch him and beat his ass but ain't nobody ever go past that.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: I've gotta ask you: if every time Snot Boogie would grab the money and run away... why'd you even let him in the game?
    Kid: What?
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Well, if every time, Snot Boogie stole the money, why'd you let him play?
Kid: Got to. It's America, man.

If you want an interesting comparison now watch Homicide: Life on the Street. Similar series (they share a lot of writers/actors), also in Baltimore but less focused on the people and more on the police. Homicide has a great villian too: Luther Mahoney who isn't in that many episodes but totally sets the tone for the series.

If you do an archive search for "HBO Wire" you'll find 4 or 5 threads....but since I love this show so much I'll leave this thread open.

The Wire was the best show to ever be put on television. My wife, who isn't really into the cop shows, thought it was amazing and went out and rented all the seasons at once. We watched nothing but The Wire for at least a month

I liked the first season very much, season 2 was pretty good too. After that it got real slow and boring I found.

I felt the EXACT opposite. It took me about 10 tries to get into season 1...finally I made it through and by the tail end of season 2 I was completely hooked.

season 2 was a bit weird for me with the docks, frank sabotka, the russians and all that. really not a whole lot of avon/marlo/stringer - but season 3 got right back to it and tied it altogether at the end. i was hooked since the first episode.

This show is great -- not as great as The Shield, but still very good. My gf and I are near the beginning of Season 4. Omar rocks the ghetto.

best. show. ever. season 5 is some of the most
    epic television made, imo.

my favorite part is when omar goes to prop

Yeah, The Shield started losing steam for me around the point that Azevedo got "assaulted". By the last season I really didn't care about 1/2 the characters and was just waiting for it to end.

The Wire held me to the end and I could've watched more seasons. One thing The Wire did was almost make you find something to like in the bad guys... D'Angelo, Avon, Stringer Bell, Omar, Marlo, Snoop and Chris... all had some interest to the viewer.

Omar: At night I do. And I keeps one in the chamber in case you ponderin'.
