Thread: pimp gold

  1. 11-22-2009 11:17 PM #1
this is pimp gold. i can't remember exactly where it got this nickname from, but someone said it once, and it stuck.

it started life as a 1.7L 8V, then got a 1.8 8V that lasted about a year. then i had ideas of a 9A, and stuffed one in there but never finished it because i got greedy and wanted a VR instead.

so a VR went in about 2 years ago, and that's pretty much where things stopped. life kept getting in the way, and no real progress was made until about 2 weeks ago. at that time, it was decided to either send the car to the boneyard, or get it roadworthy so it could be driven to our new house on december 22nd

as you can tell, the VR is history, but i think that the latest option is the best.

a colossal shout goes out to those superstars tom and marco at SEM who hooked me up with the full swap with 2 days notice. they've also followed up with other bits and pieces that i forgot to ask for (booster/master/e-brake bits/etc.) on a next day UPS basis. thanks, guys. i promise that i'll be able to tell you guys apart on the phone one day...

auto-clearancing the rear arches on the way to WF10 back when it was an 8V:

more pix and info as it happens...

for the last 3 years or so, yeah, it's had burnt up 16" steelies or long beaches with killed rubber while it's been sitting there waiting for things to happen.

i've got a set of GLX bugattis and a set of corrado speedlines with toyo RA-1s for when i'm running laps, and a set of borbet type C 16s with a 25 offset for street use. we'll see what the fenders allow for...

what's up, guy? yeah, it's me. still kicking, just busy with life and wasting it away. haven't been to any good stateside gatherings lately, tho i would like to change that for 2010 and beyond.

    Man I hate wiring

both. going from that fully detatched shack you saw to an end unit townhouse, but it's only 10 minutes from alee's work (and our daughters' school), so i get to do the 45+ minute home-work-home commute from now on.

wiring makes my brain bleed. my buddy does everything, i just grab beer and food for him and let him make fun of me when i can't a piece of string in a knot. it used to be embarassing, but i've completely come to terms with the fact that i'm as useless as cans on a nun.

Make sure your 2010 trips involve MD and drag Sandor along. Every year I want to come up there on my way out East but it may be a bit risky

If this is what I think it is ............... MAKE ME ONE!

The stock aluminum upright from the tranny is garbage, I've re-tapped mine with coarser threads and upgraded the bolts.

it's custom to this particular swap.

it was designed and fabbed when the engine was hanging off the engine crane. once it was installed in the car, the tranny mount with 80K on it hung the engine down another 3/4", which meant that 3/4" had to be cut out of it.

if another one was made for you, it absolutely wouldn't work, and would need to be binned and redesigned, i'm sure. take a look at the one shot of the empty engine bay. you can see how the brackets have been welded into the bumper tunnels.

Something like this would get me close or would definitely work with my set up. Like I mentioned, I already re-tapped the factory aluminum upright off the MKIV tranny and upgraded the bolts.

are you running a tranny mount at all? or just solid aluminum mk4 bracket to the welded metal bracket off the bumper tunnel?

have you got a picture of it all bolted up together?

  27. 11-29-2009 11:48 PM #27
some more progress this weekend. the rad is in place, and wiring for the front end is done and run into the cabin.

wiring for the front right corner has been passed through the lower rad support.

the base for the mk4 shifter linkage has been welded in place

the remnants of the centre seat base sliders have been removed. in their places, steel has been welded in on either side of them so that new bases can be built up for a pair of corbeaus i've had kicking around for 3 years. this is where i was allowed to weld, and it shows in the quality.

i started to pull up the remainder of the sound deadening so that we could see what parts of the floors and firewall needed to be stitched back together. the last quarter century has not been kind to pimp. whatever, i never intended for it to be a show car. it's going to be going to the track as often as i can afford to, and i'm going to beat it like it owes me money.

    23 more days to go...
