moved and got a modded mk1 wiper linkage stuffed into it:

Hey Jay, if you want you can have one of a couple mk1 scirocco wiper chassis/linkages that I have kickin around. Consider it as a donation to the cause. Just let me know. Nothing like OEM goodness

thanks, claudio! i may take you up on that at some point, but for now, the set up we've got in there seems to do the trick.

    and now, today's updates:

some new braces to stiffen things up a bit:

the battery box with a battery in it:

the last bit of bracketry to hold the dash in place:

corbeau seat bucket braces in and almost done:

    driver door cut out:

Is there a reason you moved the battery to that particular location?

all my mk1s have had carpet. it's the sound deadening that gets the boot. as for the backseat, i wanted to keep them OE cuz i've blown my stones for years at the prospect of running matching tweed front buckets.

kinda like that rat bastard sandor.

at some point, that is the plan.

it's also the plan to run a full haldex system from a TT, cage, some kind of 4- or 6-piston front brake upgrade, etc., but you know those aren't going to happen anytime soon either...

don't think i'll paint it anytime soon. rat look paint quality means i can park anywhere, and people will give me room.

It seems the battery would be better on the opposite side for weight distribution. It's on the same side as the driver.

true, but the fuel pump assembly is already set up there.

in time, i'll rock a deka or something similar. this just happens to be the perfect size for the big battery that came in the cars in the first place.

as for weight distribution, i think i'm going to have a ton of things working against me. namely the height of the car. have you seen the angle of my control arms?

hopefully i can make up for some of the cars' deficiencies with a heavier right foot...

    This build is dope!

Aren't you supposed to run a dry cell inside the passenger cabin? I might be wrong, but I thought these guys need to vent to atmosphere.

you probably do. as i said tho, i'll be running a deka battery at some point, so the added weight and death fumes won't be that much of a concern.

ditto. had some troubles modifying the OEM intercooler, so it looks like it'll be running without an one for a bit.

driver side axle should be ready this evening.

    what's left on the menu:

    engine/tranny:
    -final mount of engine/tranny
    -fit driveshafts
-figure out the coolant and intake pipework

    wiring:
    -wire up the motor
    -mount ECU and wiring
    -mount instrument cluster
-figure out what to do about turn signal/horn controls

    interior:
    -finalize mounting of buckets
    -sort out seat belts
    -final install of dash/carpet
-heater core (might not happen yet...good thing it's -10ºC out there)

    brakes:
    -modify mk4 booster
    -mount booster/master
    -mount seized wilwood prop valves
-run full brake lines front to back

    steering/suspension:
    -reassemble rack and install
-figure out which tie rods will work on a mk1 with mk2 spindles (ideas anyone?)
-mount suspension all around, adjust height to full jam

    exhaust:
    -fab 3" dp
-fab exhaust...(might just run a DP with turn down for now)

    fuel:
-check if the fuel in the tank is jello yet
-connect B3 passat 16V fuel assembly to mk4 rail
-fill it up with ultra 94

and a stack of other stuff...

All the aircooled Bugs and Type III's had their batteries underneath the seat, and they definitely weren't dry cells.

not at all. that's the mk1 steering column at a slightly different angle than stock.
