Well then post some thoughtful comments there, dammit! I don't want to bump my own thread... again.

Nice. That's a lot of detail. You are going to drive it, right? I don't wanna see any trailer queens, bub.

When you say "Kafer brace", you mean the pickle fork supports that bolt to the shock towers, I assume?

I don't want to hijack the thread, but your build is nice enough I would like to get your opinion... I have been debating on how to finish my engine mounts in my "Not Aunt Bea" '66 and I already have a new Gene Berg rubber isolated traction bar. Do you like the Kafer braces better than a mid mount, in conjunction with a mid mount or do you think either is fine up to xx hp?

I'm planning on a 2275 with 48s and a moderately aggressive cam and timing, but not too much compression. 42X37.5 valves and a semi-aggressive port job should finish up the job. I'm thinking Berg's mid-mount, the traction bar and either the firmer stock mounts or urethane mounts along with that. Whatcha think?

I just build nice cars. No trailer queens, not my style. Those mounts should work OK for you, I don't have any experience with them. My issue with this car is that it is a sun bug, not too many left. I want to keep the welding or mods to the frame or body to an absolute minimum, so I will be building my own brace. It is getting a type 4 motor so that necessitates the need for the brace. From what I have read these motors put out alot more torqe than a type 1 motor and will bend the frame horns. Trying to keep everything bolt on.

Gotcha. Yeah, the Type IV engine is pretty torquey, but a Type I engine certainly can be, too! The other thing that can bend the pickle fork is the sheer weight of the Type IV. Since you're building your own, you can do a bolt-on pretty easily, but if you want to save the work, there are a couple on the market that are bolt-ons as well. Yeah, I figure you'll build it yourself, though.

Some weld on, some bolt on. I don't know which I'd use unless I wanted to be able to change it back. If I put my 1775 engine in "Aunt Bea", you're damn straight it will be bolt-in mods only!

Haven't done much with it lately, but I did build my kafer bar. Turned out
exactly as I had planned. No cutting of the body was required. I also put
the type I to type II drive flanges on so that I could use the Porsche cv's.

I also took the porsche cv's apart and powder coated them, greased and installed.

And this is the engine I will be using. Type IV 1800cc with 2K miles. Just put it in to check fit. Still need to get the flywheel machined
for the output shaft bearing. Probably going with the Raby DTM setup for cooling.

Thanks guys. Patience is definitely needed on some of my projects
I also took out the other seats because they didn't fold forward.
I put in some 944 seats instead.

Looking good! I really like the traction bar. It's overkill for my situation, as my Berg traction bar should suffice for me, but yours is actually better. I wonder if both would be appropriate for some instances...

there is a 3 bar and a 5 bar kafer brace. either of those will probably take anything a street car can throw at it. i have the 3 bar with a 2.7 type 4 (nitrous fed) and it keeps the wheel hop to a minimum.

Hmmmmm. You got me on that one. I've never seen a 5 bar brace.

    Keep at it, man.

    Freaking AWESOME!

  18. 03-11-2012 11:18 PM #53
Thanks. It would be more freaking awesome if I finished it. Too many projects. Morons keep hitting my other cars and totalling them out. That makes 2 cars in ten months. Idiots.
I should just buy a new one and quit fixing all this old ish.

I'm in a bit of a slump, myself. Is it worth it? Only you can decide that for yourself, but don't do anything rash.

Btw, that 5 bar setup looks pretty damn strong! I don't think I'll be needing that one. My Berg bar will do fine for my 1775 and a 3er will take care of a moderate 2275.

Thanks. The seats look better than I thought they would. They look like they belong. That pic is just the indent of the screw in the piston. The screw is stuck in the head. Makes for a good conversation piece. It ran but it sounded like the rod knock from hell.

Finally got some wheels. 17x7 front, 17x9 rear. Starting on the cooling system now. Much fabrication to do. Pulled apart the heater boxes. Now need to fabricate an exhaust system utilizing the bus heater boxes.

They tuck in nicely. 55 offset front and rear.

    Innards.

    Lots of work to do.

Or you could go with this, though I think you still need to shorten the heater boxes. I'd include a pic, but their site says the photos are copyrighted.

The heater boxes will be shortened. I ordered some stainless steel tubing and will begin building my own system. I have seen that muffler but it is way too pricey.

  25. 06-01-2012 01:39 AM #60
Changed the front rotors so that I could bolt on the front wheels and pulled the engine.

Also swapped out the front springs with some H&R ones.

The adapters came for the throttle bodies. Still need to order the megasquirt.

    Cut back the heater boxes.

The tin showed up so I started to fit it.

    More to come.
