Thread: V8 swap... into a Prius

    1. 12-16-2009 11:18 AM #1
Just a silly idea I had. The irony would be killer though!

I'd drive one, but it has to have no cats, and be pretty load, so everyone knows

      It'd be a waste of a perfectly good V8.

Prius is light and has the sleeper effect. I bet it would be a total hoot.

I agree, it's silly and pointless too. I guess it would be good for those who have too much $$$$ and have no clue what to do with it Otherwise if you're just getting by, the whole idea of modding a less than desirable looking Prius with a thirsty engine won't do you any good. Especially when you can just go out and buy a WRX, Civic Si, Cobalt SS if you really need more speed that bad at the expense of MPG. That's not to say there isn't better ways to get more MPG than the Prius too, for your dollars that is.

what about a haybusa or zx14 swap and leave the electric drivetrain in place for low end torks? that would be awesome, and it would most likely actually fit under the hood, idk how well the CVT would deal with it, though.

That would be a better swap... from a size, sleeper, and practicality perspective. A V8 would make too much noise that it really wouldn't be a sleeper, and too much torque* that I'd wonder if the Prius would stay in one piece.
      * If you're going through the trouble of swapping in a V8, you're not going to put in a stock ~300hp small block.

Well, the "CVT" in a Prius is really an entirely different beast than a "normal" CVT, and infact there are no even remotely similar parts really.. I'd imagine it would work pretty well actually. The Prius drivetrain is actually pretty damn spiffy IMHO.

I would DD this V8 Prius... Running so rich people behind it cry like they're cuttin onions, a cam that can barely idle, and a set of MT sportsmans so fat it looks like a steamroller from the rear. The tough part for me would be legally skinning enough special-interest banner-toting activists to adorn the interior in c**t leather.

The only thing more fitting would be a Detroit Diesel with no emissions equipment present.

The concept is pretty stupid really, because the rest of the Prius is well, a Prius. You'd have to re-engineer the suspension front and rear since you're changing the drive layout. Also, the unibody in a Prius is probably not meant to handle V8 torque so you'd have to strengthen it, you'd have to add a bigger radiator and make a larger opening in the grille so enough air could circulate, etc etc. By the time you got finished it probably wouldn't be recognizable as a Prius, it would look more like a Funny car.

It'd also be pretty retarded to chop up a Prius considering how well they hold their re-sale value, and that the value of a Prius at all is its hybrid-ness. Who would want one otherwise? A V8 Prius would be a ****ty hotrod and a ****ty econobox at the same time.
VW's are proof of miracles. Most of the cars on the Vortex leave a double rainbow behind in the parking spot.
