Thread: Force Fed Engineering Presents Drag Racing 02m Dog Box

    1. 12-20-2009 06:13 PM #1
Here at Force Fed Engineering we are actively involved in the design and development of a dog box gear set setup for drag racing; The 02m transmission has currently no options for a gear set that is appropriate for the application.
We reached a point this year where we were spending lot of time and communicating with the big companies about making us gears for our race car, liberty, ppg, sqs etc. No one really seemed to understand the necessity for proper gearing for cars with drag racing in mind, so we found someone who will listen.
We are working with a transmission manufacturer that is in the US so there will be no outlandish shipping, exchange rates or issues that have come up with other manufacturers.
We are in the initial stages of development on the vw/audi side of the dog boxes currently with a projected completion date for late march 2010!
This kit is being developed to offer a solution that would withstand ~1000whp, have ideal gear ratios for drag racing and shift at high rpm, where the stock gearing cannot.
This gear kit will utilize a factory ring and pinion since they have not been an issue, this will keep cost down as well.
Our kit will be complete new gears, 1-4, selectors/hubs, Billet Shift forks and at this time we are discussing a billet input shaft with a provision for a pilot bearing to further eliminate inherent issues with harmonics.
We will also be developing billet shift fork upgrades for stock selector assemblies for people who are not having issues that some of the race cars are having with high rpm engagement and reliability.
Early pricing puts us in the $5000 range for the gear sets.
Some highlights are lengthened first gear and a very low rev drop to suit tremendous whp cars that may not have the revs to support a large powerband.
We will be the only distributor for these gearsets.
These gears will cover all 02m, 02q, and other synonomous variants.
      Models covered will be:
      mk1,2,3,4 swap 02m
      gti 337
      2003 20th ae
      2004 GLI 1.8t
      All 24v VR6 equipped vehicles
      R32 Haldex
      TT Haldex
      TT non haldex 02m only
      Audi A3/S3
      Etc, Etc.
For anyone who is interested or has questions please email or call the shop and ask for me directly.

They were not being proactive with the development, and now I am glad as there have been multiple honda failures with their gear sets, so I had these developed.

hope things work out but every gear set does break . good luck with this product and next year.

That is true, anything abused will break.
Luckily 02m gears are much larger than anthing else fwd vw or honda an I have not broken a gear or r&p and have been running the same transmission for 4 years now. Mis shifted back to 11,500 rpm 2 times, lifted the back of the car off the ground etc.
These gears will be a nice, stout option.

This isnt going to need testing, these are setups that wont be given away. And we have no plans in 01e stuff, this is for 02m style only at this time, sorry.

If you guys want to find 10 guys to commit to ~5000 I will happily have a dog engagement gear set made.
I am paying for these sets to be made and stocked.
If you feel there are at least 10 serious for 01e let me know.

Right, in the title it says 02m, in the cars listed are all fwd or haldex, I didnt think this was one bit confusing...
The whole post describes the 02m/q and lists everything out, but like I said if you guys are looking for something else, let me know in an email.

We became non-"proactive" when people backed out, if nobody wants it why would we make it.
There have been a couple random "failures" out of many many sets, but anything will have that, and it is still much lower rate than anything else out there.

very good. i took it to mean you were going with further platforms later in the spring.
no big deal, mine'll have a PAR gearset next month, its cool....

lol, looks like i annoyed someone.
I called, called, called, stayed up all night, emailed info, specs, pictures, had a trans on a pallet waiting to ship out, no one ever returned my emails or calls over the course of 2-3 months. I spoke to someone maybe twice. I even said payment upfront for half or all of my gearbox is no probem.
Please stay out of this thread, thanks.

Any idea what the difference between the FWD and AWD O2M gears is? We've had tons of people breaking gears at only 500-600whp. I know your drag car is making significantly more. I'm sure these gears will help, but if there is some other underlying cause that's leading to us breaking gears......

Torque breaks gears, also poor traction, wheel hop and hard engagement can cause failures.
My car spins 1st and 2nd always, no way around it, 3rd gear will spin too if the momentum isnt up on the short end of the track.
With vr6 cars the torque is the same as the horspower and it can and will break whatever it can when the 4cly cars are much more soft in the midrange, less abrupt.
I have not had the metal between the gears itself tested for any differences in materials but I can assure everyone here that the new gears will be not lacking strength and they will apply to all applications across the board, which is the beauty of these gearboxes, they cover so many applications and will correct so many issues from short gear ratios, big rpm drops, low mph in 4th gear etc on all the applications above and more, seats, skodas etc.

Sounds great Ed I'll certainly be following this.
I've been waiting for a company to develop a product like this. I'll actually be able to turn the boost up above wastegate pressure without fearing the worst.
