Ride more, get faster, have fun.

I guess I'll get around to making more specific goals towards the end of the year... <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://is.rely.net/2-64-38849-l-miLiM9RbflKgiExmFe7Gpw.gif" BORDER="0">

    EDIT:
Okay, in 2009 I entered my first mountain races, then my first road races (albiet training crits), and did my first complete season of Cyclocross (with my first podium finishes too, albiet in the slow category).

This year, let's say I want to go on at least a couple tours, do a longer road race, do more MTB riding than last year, become a much better bike handler in general, and do better in cyclocross. And to be able to pop a wheelie for extended distances.

    This seems cool!

last year when I purchased my new bike I set a goal of 2k for my main road bike, by the end of December (I bought the bike in April). Then as it got close to my wedding I pretty much stopped riding for about a month other than an occasional jaunt (didn't realize how much time this would require). Once I returned from our honeymoon I revised my goal for 1750mi, and on Dec 31st my odo read 1750.2 miles.

This year my goal is 2500 road miles, we'll see how it goes!

Other cycling goals for 2010: team 24hr mountain race and complete a century.

    Thanks for doing this again

I'm hoping for somewhere close to 2,500 road miles so went a little higher with a random 2727 mile target. I started cycling last May and rode about 4 centuries, and one informal race.

    Goals:

  9. Ride across Pennsylvania (Philly->Pitts) in under 40 hours.
  10. Ride the Col de Tourmalet stage of the 2010 Tour de France.
  11. Go to France to do it, and watch other stages too, wearing something stupid to try and get on TV.
  12. Start training / riding with people training for Crits.
  13. Investigate / enter cat 5 races.
  14. Ride a bunch more centuries, and have a blast doing it.
  15. Meet more cycling people, and have a lot of fun.

I'm trying to get back in to riding this year, It's been a while since I've ridden any significant amount.

    My goals for 2010:

-Join a local riding group (for motivation mostly)
-Complete a few century rides without dying
    -Ride daily
-I'd like to do about 1500 miles for the season.

my trainer should be here this week, and I plan to get at least an hour a day on it.

Rode about 4000 km last year (just under 2500 mi), and that's close to the maximum mileage I can attain while staying married, spending time with the kids and paying the bills. (We also have about 6 months of winter which makes me focus on skiing instead of riding)

I rode my first 200 km timed event last season, which I finished in about 6 hours. I've been eying up the 12 hours event. If training goes well, and the stars align I'd love to try for 400 km in 12 hours.

Then I looked up the records on http://www.ultracycling.com/re....html and realized that 250 miles in 12 hours is awfully close to the record

Yup.. with the female record at 225 miles or something like that. I would love to do 200mi in 12 hours, but the records are scaring me a little!

I nailed a couple top 10's last season, looking to be a bit faster. =]

    -complete 2nd century (september)
-complete local MS Jack and Back ride.
-possibly upgrade frame or wheels at some point during the year
-lose 30 lbs (currently at 225)
    -buy an indoor trainer
-possibly enter local wed night crit series.
-find a local club to ride with to increase riding skills and performance

I will keep my goal at 7,000 miles since I missed it last year by 750 miles. The month is not looking like it will be a good start to this year.

I am on a new team this year that does the same kind of races that I like to do, I may end up a CAT 2 and I don't think I really want to upgrade. We will have to see how the season goes. I already have 8 points for the upgrade from one race last fall.

  23. 01-08-2010 09:31 AM #15
No mileage goals for me. I'll ride a lot, and don't need a number to keep me on the bike.

That said, I've still got other goals:

    -Top 20 at Chequamegon
-Continue to win/podium at MTB races
    -Win a road race
-Stop sucking at CX races, or at least give more of a crap about them and do more than ride support for friends.
    -Not perish at Mohican 100
    -Leadville?

  24. 01-09-2010 02:07 AM #16
'09 was a horrible year for me, as I didn't put 1 mile on the bike. This after coming of 3000+ miles for '08. Really need to get back on it again this year. So in the spirit of the new year, I think I'll set a soft goal of 2010 miles. If I get back into riding w/ the club I rode w/ in '08, that should be pretty easy.

Website has been updated. Some of the advancements for 2010 are now live and in beta testing.

Please let me know if you experience any issues so I can squash any bugs you may find asap.

So far I've quickly beta tested the site using the latest revisions of Safar for Mac, FireFox for Mac, Chrome for Mac, and IE 8 on Windows XP.

Should I be able to see the 2010 table yet? IE 8 on Vista.

General question; do trainer miles count?

Cool. I've never used a trainer before, so haven't been tracking them. For some reason they don't seem like 'real' miles, must be the lack of wind in my hair or something

I can't say I have any goals, just some longer distance rides this year.

I'm also new to the trainer... what do you guys use for tracking your miles on it? Just set up a trip computer on the rear wheel?

  32. 01-20-2010 03:48 PM #24
I haven't been tracking trainer miles but might start soon to reach a reasonable mileage goal.

    Qualitative goals:
    - Look into CAT5 racing
    - Ride more with a club
    - Ride after swimming and before running

  33. 01-20-2010 06:59 PM #25
Goals (which are now harder as an Audi store mgr w/ HUGE hours):

Sea Otter: 1st place, Cat I 40+ XC
Downeyville: 1st place, Cat I XC & DH (or podium if i race pro)
    State Championship XC: 1st place

Then it's fillers thru the year of some good more road races since too many conflicted last year.

Do the 3 metrics and 2 centuries I did last year. Maybe add one more if I can find someplace I want to ride.

Up my miles from 2,000 to probably 3,000. We did have pretty sucky weather here in the Northeast last summer, so I plan to learn to ride in the rain and buy the gear for such.

Add a long, multi-day ride somewhere. And enjoy the scenery more as I ride, rather than just being attached to someone's rear wheel.

Thanks, BarnDweller, for making this possible.

    1) Finish Tour of The Battenkill top 15 CAT5 (First true Road Race and first season back in 10yrs from racing and first time racing road makes this a lofty but attainable goal me finks), Podium Local Circuit Race in August, Podium in 3 local CRITS in SE Pa.

    2) Improve Endurance by training on a 450hr ATP

    3) Drop down to 150lbs by March 1st from 159 presently and maintain this weight as much as possible through the season, a drop to 145lbs would be acceptable will probably come with my increased volume and getting back into racing (road this time around it's a whole new world for me).

    4) CAT down to CAT3 if I can get in enough racing this season, but only if performance is on par, not just if I get in the races to CAT down.

    5) Increase CP180 to 240Watts

    6) Most important (2) items for myself and actually should be for all and no one has mentioned..........
    A) Sleep a min of 8hrs a night, every night!!!!!!!!
    B) Diet needs to be nutritionally balanced and well adhered to, in addition to making sure supplements and Vitamins are accommodating increased volume in ATP.

"Food for Fitness" by Carmichael has made me realize as healthy as I ate previously, I had massive room for improvement. Food is the easiest way in which I have seen gains come forth, with the least amount of energy expended

Did my first cat 4 race on Sunday, and goal is to become a cat 2 by the end of the season.

Miles - I'm going to up last year's goal of 7k to 10k, but will focus on the quality of training/intensity over making that mileage goal.

I want to learn as much as I can about tactics and try some different things in the way of breaking/attacking. I am so glad (in AZ) the season is finally here!!

  38. 01-26-2010 05:57 PM #30
I kinda failed to keep track of last years goal of 5500 miles, I do believe I hit it just about the end of the summer. This year I'm not going to necessarily count miles but I want to be out on a bike more frequently. I'm gunning for 4-5 days a week of some sort of riding, incorporating more mountain than I did last year. For grins ill see if I can hit 5500 road miles again this year.

I will however see about upping the number of centuries I will do this year. Last year I did 5, this year... how about 7.

As of today I set a goal to participate in a 200 km, 2-day charity ride in August.

Considering I haven't ridden in many years (despite desire to), this is going to be quite a challenge for me.

Everything else is secondary to that goal right now (I'll cover as many kms as it takes to get in good shape for it).

    My Goal:

Get back to my normal training routine and simply ride more. While 09 was better than 08 - i'm still WAY behind in terms of what I was doing before that. The only thing that has increased has been my weight

As for miles they might not be as high as I want because I want to do more MTB riding this year. Time of the bike is the same - the pace is just slower

We're looking forward to possibly doing Cycle Oregon again this year, as well as MTB Oregon. We've also got a trip to Moab planned as well for the end of the year.

  41. 01-30-2010 12:56 AM #33
Incase you've missed it, last week I added a simple bar graph to the sites home page.
The top bar represents the collective total of actual miles cycled since the 1st of the year while the bottom bar represents the collective total of projected miles to be cycled that year (The sum of all season goals).

You can also hide / show the graph by clicking the new menu item as seen below (The graph is hidden by default).

Actual miles cycled by all participants in 2009: 52,401.93 mi.
Projected miles to be cycled in 2009: 120,751.00 mi.

    http://vwvortex.dkozikowski.com/cycle/

Let me know if you have any other ideas for motivational graphs. I may eventually implement a couple more...
