Error CODE P2187 & P2189: NEED HELP

Add a few codes come up today

P2187 & P218. Bank 1 & 2 running lean at idle

Read alot online, people with the same codes were experiencing bad gasmilage as well, which I can concer with.

Havnt been able to find a definite, answer any suggestions.

Replace purge valve?? (P/N?)

MAF??

Fuel filter??

Need help. I keep getting engin codes and 265 miles per tank.

I had the same symptoms and error code's last spring. I reset the code like 5 times with VAD over a month's span and the last time I reset the codes never returned.

It wouldn't hurt buying some MAF cleaner and giving that a go. As well as checking for any obvious leaks in the area.

I don't recommend using MAF cleaner unless you know for sure that the MAF is dead. MAF cleaner is temporary fix.

I would check to make sure all the cloth vacuum lines are good. There are some behind the intake manifold above the heat shield for the exhaust manifold. Also check the vacuum line at the combi valve (below the throttle body).

If any of those vacuum line appear to be brittle / broken replace them and then clear the faults and road test and recheck later.

260 miles a tank is not bad IMO.

Not yet. I am going to try the fuel filter first because I already have a new one sitting in my tool box but I was seeing if anyone else had these types of issues.

You know I heard this, tried it out and 2yrs later my MAF is still fine. I'll admit that's probably an oddball thing for these cars. Seems to work on the A3 VR MAF's as well.

Go figure.

Not going to kill it unless you get your fingers all over it. Stuff evaporates pretty quickly.

Not saying it will work in your case, but in my case it did and made it through about 6 tracks days and two years. Also stand corrected it failed this year finally, but that was after two years since I had cleaned the thing. Decided not to clean it this time around.

Any one change a fuel filter?

I believe there is a DIY under the Gti/Jetta forum but I wasn't sure if its same for R's

Is it also back by the rear passenger wheel?

Yes, there's a DIY and be careful with the clips on the fuel filter. I heard it's an expensive fix if you break one. and yes the filter is at the RR of the car

I remember reading about the clips, which is why I have yet to do it.

UPDATE:

I did more research and found that an engine code stating you are running lean is very common after installing a new pre-oiled air filter, like in short ram and cold air intakes (I installed a new VF intake 1 week before the engine light came on). Excess oil can be sucked off and land on the sensitive wire of the MAF. A cleaning was recommended.

I used some cleaner and it seems to be gone. Let’s hope it stays away.

DAMN IT!

Light came on while driving home last night.

Im going to scan it again today to see if its the same sh*t, which it probably is.

This weekend I want to try and change the fuel filter and possible coolant flush (I have an extra thing of coolant).

Anyone other suggestions?
