Thread: Why do gas pumps slow down so soon ?

    1. 01-24-2010 01:10 AM #1
Today I was pumping gas in my girlfriend's car. I went inside paid the women inside and then started to pump my gas. As I was standing the cold, it hit me. Why when I prepay for my gas does the pump slow down way before my desired amount. It starts slowing down like 50 cents before the amount I want. Why does it do that ? To save the pump mechanically ? I figured someone in here has to know the answer.

There is this pump by my house that pumps roughly 1 cent every second. Explain that one to me. Filter?

Agreed. Some are worse than others, don't know why.. I guess they can be set that way. I've noticed some that slow down around the last 25 cents, some the last 50 or more.

Most the ones I've encountered round my way it starts to slow down anywhere from 10 cents to 50 cents away, which isn't too bad imo.

I guess this is a benefit of the NJ system. Being able to sit in the warmth of the car and pay cheap prices. I never understood the hate the system gets on here. Doesn't matter anyway since I no longer live there and have to do it manually now and pay 10 cents more per gallon for the privilege.

      this.

it's easier to stop a slower flow of gasoline, they wanna make sure it does not go over the amount you paid / prevents waste of gasoline.

few days ago i prepaid 20$ of gas and some misc snacks.

well i go out and pump and 20$ comes and goes... it keeps going.

it stopped at 40. i looked at my receipt, looked at the pump, laughed and drove off. i spend thousands at that station chain a year so i figure they will live with 20$.

      human error > pump error!

The reason gas pumps slow down before it stops at the desired amount 50 cents early is so you don't panic and run over to try to stop it. In the back of your mind you know if it over pumps you're going to have to pay for it, so you will attempt to stop it.

If it started to slow down 5 cents before it came to your desired amount you would panic and trip over yourself trying to stop it. Some people insist on standing by the pump the whole time in the freezing cold. What you don't realize is there's a kick stand that holds the trigger on the gas pump, then get back in your car and stay warm.

Sometimes gas stations don't include the little 'kick-stands' to hold the pump handle up, which sucks. Or, it holds it up but pumps very slowly, which also sucks. The closest gas station to my house starts slowing down at $.70 before reaching it's pre-pay amout, and I don't go there anymore.

My car's gas cap seems to be the perfect height to stuff into the handle to keep it pumping. Works great!!

Something similar happen to me last year.

Here in Oregon, they pump it for us

I had a $5 bill in my hand and the guy I wanted $5 worth (expensive station but enough to get me to the cheaper station).

I notice it's taking rather long to get to $5 and turns out he never set it for $5 and it ended up filling the tank.

The guy unhooked the pump and put the cap on, came over and said "That'll be $5"
Me - "Ok, here ya go."
Him - "Have a good day"

Not bad eh? All I had was $5 on me (in cash) and got over $30 in premium for free.

Freezing your ass off while pumping gas? I don't know what you're talking about? I'm pretty warm in my car while I watch someone else pump the gas for me.

We don't have this. Hand has to be on the trigger...

We also don't have prepay though - you pump then go in and pay, or put a card into the pump, authorise it, then pump as much as you want (no specified amount). I hate prepay, how do you know the exact amount you want to the penny if you just want to fill her up? No full service pumps either, everyone pumps their own.

This is a pet peeve of mine, as well. There are certain pumps I've been to that start to slow down around $.25 before, and slow at a reasonable rate. That's cool. Most of them will take FOREVER for the last $.50, and I mean like molasses. They really don't need to go that slow.

Also, the little latch on the handles seems to have disappeared around here, too. My gas cap isn't big enough to work, either. Oh well, whatever.......I really wish that damn slow-down thing wasn't so....slow.

Who the hell pre-pays now? Just pay with plastic and burn them (the gas station owner) on fees.

Except for the fact that the gas station has raised it's price of gas to cover the credit card transaction fees.

At least they don't do CASH/CREDIT pricing. I refuse to get gas at those stations.

Well, doing the cash/credit pricing is actually against the terms of being able to accept VISA/Mastercard (maybe there are exceptions). The credit card companies want the fees hidden from the end users so they don't know they are getting charged more for using credit cards. This is why places like Costco don't accept VISA/ Mastercard, so that they don't have to raise the prices of the merchandise to be able to cover those fees set by the credit card companies.

If you watch, the credit price at the cash/credit pricing stations is usually the same price as the regular one-price gas stations (taking into account regular station-to-station fluctuations).

The cash/credit stations are doing that in an attempt to save you money. If you pay with a credit card, then they have to pay the credit card company a transaction fee. If you pay with cash, they pass the savings on to you.

You don't, if you want $20 - you prepay $20. If you want to fill it up, choose $100 or something more than you could ever fit into your tank.

And they don't have the little kick stands on the pumps any more because people were setting them, going into their car and setting the entire gas station on fire from static electricity.

Step 1 - Pay with plastic

Step 2 - Set pump on lock and get back in car

Step 3 - Wait for pump to click

Step 4 - Get out of car, put gas cap back in, get back in car, drive off

      Problem solved.
