Hmm, I'll wait until there is an Atom 330 tablet with Ion2 and 160gb for around the same price (somewhere between $499 and $829)...

Actually I probably won't buy either.

I dont understand how this fits in to the marketplace. Why would someone need this who has a laptop and a smartphone? Its not as portable as a smartphone and cant execute as many functions as a laptop. So where is its value?

The point is to make people convert, and not expand the number of their devices. So, instead of getting a new laptop, one may consider this. Keep your iPhone for even more mobility. It makes plenty of sense.

but it doesnt have all the features/abilities that a laptop does so it cant replace one. nor is it as portable as a smartphone.

I dont think anyone is going to convert from anything to an iPad...... I think the best chance this device has is to erode at the kindle... it isnt going to erode iphone or macbook sales

Dirt. Cheap. Criticism will end shortly...

    starting at $499 for 16GB

Funny definition of dirt cheap. $499 for 16gb. Yeah, only $150 more than a netbook than can run just about any app. $829 for 64gb and the ability to use this device as intended, connected anywhere.

You're right but syncing to a PC is what most people would use a USB for anyway.

Though the lack of an SD slot is a huge minus for me.

You can't plug anything into it though. Thats the problem. They have the ability to connect it to your computer, which makes almost no sense except for windows users since most mac have blue tooth I thought.

I think I'd rather have something with a full-OS running on it like HP's Slate.

This is rather disappointing. A giant iPhone.

Agreed, with the keyboard dock, its got some real competition with my MacBook. I think I will see what the iPad looks like next year.

just what ATT's network needs is more people leeching data bandwidth off it to check facebook and twitter

Not to mention the extra cash they'll get.

A company needs to offer a go-anywhere broadband internet plan that can be used on anything. Right now people have home internet, phone internet, some with mobile internet with laptops, and now internet for the iPad?

Keeping AAPL product price points in mind, it is dirt cheap and/or reasonably price.

i disagree. i don't think it's a substitute for a notebook/tablet. it's a whole new category and the presentation states that as well. i'm not sure it's going to do too well...then again it is an apple product.

I'd take a USB port just so I could use the device to charge other devices (iPhone, digital camera) or transfer files (again, camera).

Given the choice between the two, I'd rather have a SD slot, too, but basically, there's neither.

Meh. How long till the Android tablet launches again?

Can this thing multi-task? Or can you only run one application at a time?

Does it have GPS or a camera?

People who are familiar with AAPL products tend to augment their mobility by overlapping their devices. I use my Nano more than my Iphone's ipod, for example. People who want to try these new products may see the iPad as being quite capable. How many of us have dozens of footwear, while one isn't that unique?

Doesn't appear to have either of these or multi-task. Those are some of my biggest requirements too - I use all of these devices on my iphone all the time. Perhaps thats why they are leaving them off...

It appears to not support flash, which would seem to be a real let down if you want to use it as an internet browsing device.

This is the first time in the last decade that Apple has debuted a product that I think has the potential to be a failure. I just don't see where the market is for a hybrid device like this, especially with that price point. ...if it were half the price, I'd say it would grab all the people who can't afford or havent purchased a laptop <ie...the dream of the $100 PC>. ...but at that price?

    Bye-bye Kindle.

I thought the value in the Kindle was in the eInk display, which is just like reading a book thus not causing eye fatigue. (not to mention battery life)

Isn't the iPad more like a traditional LCD screen. I'm pretty sure people don't like reading books on traditional computer screens.

as soon as i saw what it did i knew the price..... it is an iPod Touch with a larger display..... so what does an ipod touch run 299? the extra cost is is to pay for the larger touch screen...... and 499 is a perfect price point because it competes with netbooks.... and its not so far off the kindle in price vs abilities

i think apple priced it right..... im just not sure the tablet is something that anyone really needs

Now that its over and no more surprises I'm disappointed. I'm sure it will be a hit and they'll sell a bunch but as a tech device its disappointing. Probably because I was following all the patent filings and was hoping for a new type of way of interaction.

The iphone software when it came out was huge revolution, it lacked many features but the overall packaging was perfect. Since then the OS has been evolving slowly to catch up to the features it was missing. The two biggest missing features now are multitasking and better home screen/ notifications in general. I was hoping the tablet would be the place they would implement these. The iphone its understandable because of battery life and such but for a "netbook killer" its insane not to have it. Lets say your making a presentation and need to research, you have to close the presentation, open up safari. Copy what you need or memorize it, close safari then pop back into presentations and paste so you have it available to look at or go from memory. Its absurd. All this available for the same price as decently powerful ULV.

Also no video camera, a ichat camera on the front would of been perfect for a device like this.

I guess I had high expectations of this being able to replace netbooks but in the end its just a large ipod with an ebook reader. Hopefully like the iphone the OS will evolve so it can one day replace my laptop for class. The HP Slate looks a lot more appealing now.

Only interesting part was the $15 for 250mb, I would get a data plan for my iphone if that came out. I'm done with my rant, hopefully something was missing from the announcement that we'll find out leading to the release.

    the bezel sucks

if it went to the edge you'd be touching the screen area every time you grasped it. it needs some 'grab area' on it. hence the bezel.
