Steve said it himself. You need something that does better than a smartphone and notebook. What does this do better than either? It does the exact same stuff as an iPhone, just bigger.
I can guarantee Apple is holding back. They always do.

I read on various screens for >12 hours a day. People read vortex all day on screens. Books are no different.

Kindle is free connection for the books. Not a $15 per month charge to be able to pay to download a book. Or you could download on your computer and hopefully be able to use the $19 adapter to put it on your iPad without accidentally wiping everything off your iPad because you synced to the wrong computer.

The bookstore and content from providers for newspaper/magazines is really the only big thing it has. Aside from the screen size.
It's funny how excited I was over it and now that the initial excitement has worn off, I'm left with a "meh".

I haven't seen anywhere that it is a dual core.

you're right, i stand corrected, i suppose i was thinking of a different product in the pipe line. even still, the iPhone is capable, the Pad will be as well, its only being held back by firmware. wait for some updates from Apple.

wow you people are amazing! When did apple ever release any full featured product in the first generation? The first adapters will snap this up just like the i-phone. The next revisions will add the camera, etc . Flash and voice commands and other stuff will come with software upgrades. Just like the I-Phone has morphed into a full featured device so will the iPad.
And what's with the name bashing? what would you prefer, the i-slate? or the i-tablet? or i-book? to me ipad is great because it best describe what it is.

This.
It doesn't have a USB port or a SD slot, which means I can't charge devices off of it, nor could I pull photos off my digital camera onto it while on vacation.
.

theres and accessory for that

Regardless of any perceived or actual shortcomings, one simple thing comes to mind: It won't take much for somebody like Google, HP or Dell to make something like this but much more capable. If Apple is intentionally limiting this then I'd say that they over did it. They have LITERALLY released a giant iPhone. I think everybody expected much more than that. I mean, how much thought did that require?
I always plug in USBs right the first time.

Looks like flash is a no go, so no Hulu

I might as well go with some Ion or Ion-2 netbook.

Other than the obvious maxi-pad the fact that pad refers to paper pad, yet this has no pen input. I understand the keyboard is supposed to replace it but a big point with tablets is the ability to write out notes, sketch out drawings. So pad doesn't make sense. I can't imagine a capacitive stylus being that expensive, who knows maybe there will be an add-on for that, since there seems to be an add on for everything on this. So yea pad is a bad name since it misrepresents the product.

Might be useful to have something like this on your coffee table at home. Beyond that I fail to see why anyone would want this. I feel like it would be really awkward to use in a public place.

... this seems more to me like a side product like the macbook air was to the macbook pro.... something that only a small group of people are going to use.....

is there a problem with that? the advanced tech from the MBA made it in to the entire Portables line.
The iPad will improve the iPhone and iPod line.
If you wanted the iPad to cure cancer, it will let you down. But, if you like to have a gadget for all occasions, it fits the bill amazingly.
it will replace the PC Netbook on my desk, and be right at home with my 2 iMacs and iPhone.

I think I see this as supplimental....
So at home you have the work station for editing the photo's vid work, work work type stuff.
This thing allows you to have access to most of that stuff and limited editing without having to run two separate computers.
I've been trying to figure out how to do that, ie: have a killer workstation and be able to take a laptop out with me when i'm traveling, etc. The problem with doing this is there's not a viable way to "sync" them up outside of cloud storage or manual copy pasta.
This does that. You plug it in and have access to everything without carying a ton of stuff with you. Nor do you have to plunk that kind of cash down on both a tower and a laptop.
I also see this helping consolidate medical info. One chart instead of 120398120398 charts.
I think if you're even the slightest bit prescient, you can figure out plenty of legitimate uses for a device like this. If there weren't any, then all of the sci-fi programs wouldn't have everyone walking around with one.
I am disappointed in the lack of video chat/multi task though.

Using that logic, i-Slate make even less sense. A slab of stone. What relevance does that have with technology other than a design description? Sure, you can write on stone, but... The time periods seems to be in conflict.

Minimal moving parts and expandability and a level of continuity that even your netbook doesn't have.

- it's lighter
- the battery lasts longer
- there 140,000 apps that'll run on it
now maybe that's not enough, but it's certainly not 'nothing.'

My JB iPhone has more usefulness than a netbook. Why would someone question expandability? Continuity with regards to the range of Apple products, peer designed apps, etc all under one roof, so to speak.

Half the weight, but still not light.
My netbook battery lasts 5-6 hours watching video. More than enough.
I just don't see the real-life application of it. Most people either have their phone on them, or are home with access to their computer.
I think it has lots of potential though.

I too don't see the use of the iPad. We actually just picked up a netbook over the weekend in Target's clearance bin. Sure, the battery life isn't that great, but considering I can plug in when I have to, it's no big deal. My netbook only weighs a few pounds, that's nothing and I don't even really notice it. Great, the iPad will have 140,000 apps that will run on it. I can run pretty much any software package that I want on my netbook and that more than makes up for a bunch of hokey apps (which is what most of them are) that I'm never going to use. I can also download apps to use on the netbook, so again, kind of makes the iPad irrelevant. You want expansion? I've got 3 USB ports on my netbook, 1GB ram (expandable to 2), 160GB hard drive, 1.6ghz processor, video out, built in Wi-Fi, SD card slot, I can watch videos (through Netflix or wherever) etc. I paid a little over $200 for this thing, so I don't see the iPad being a "budget" item at a starting price of $499. Why in the world would I give up the netbook for something like this? Because it's an Apple and that seems to be the fashion accessory for the 21st century? Nah!
