In North Korea, the Fiat Palio is the Pyonghwa Hwiparam. Locally produced too...

Also from North Korea, the Mercedes 190 rebadged as a Kaengsaeng 88 or a Pyongyang 4.10. Could be an "unauthorized" rebadge though.

Not really a rebadge, it was a joint project engineered by the two companies - it has the Alfa Romeo flat-4 engine, Alfa transmission and Alfa front suspension, in the Nissan bodyshell.

My first car was a hand-me-down 83 Nissan Pulsar hatch. Timing chain went and when I dropped it off at the mechanic, he said that I had an Alfa engine in there. I thought he was pulling my leg......and now I see he was not wrong.

That actually looks more like 90's courier. The facelift for the mazdas came out on 96 or 97 I guess.

not exactly obscure but, I am always intrigued on the very rare occasion that I see one.

According to http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/pu....aspx , 3BLK220 was last seen by the State of California on a 1992 Cadillac DeVille in 2005.
The plate is probably fake, since plates starting with 3B were issued in 1991-1992, and did not contain any lettering on the bottom. Or someone took the actual plate when the 1992 Cadillac DeVille was scrapped or taken out of California and stuck some lettering on the bottom (though the plate looks to be in too good condition to be a real front plate, which is typically dinged up for city cars and covered in rock chips and insect stains for highway cars.

It might not be fake, just sold overseas. I sell old license plates on eBay all the time, and most of them go overseas. I recently sent a grouping of 50 plate sets to Japan. People throwing europlates on their cars here is something that is done overseas as well apparently.Didnt plates from 93 have different California lettering though? How does California handle replacement plates for ones that are lost or stolen? If someone had gotten a replacment plate for their DeVille in the late 1990's it would have looked exactly like this one. (if CA does replacement plates....I have no idea!)

Modified by a1veedubber at 7:14 AM 2-13-2010Japanese advertisements loooove to use CA license plates. They usually don't use actual used plates but replicas that are usually out of sequence .
This plate would have been from '91-'92.
5T is '03ish, 2K is '88ish.Another example:
When a JDM Honda Airwave commercial was being shot on my law school's campus, they stuck a CA plate on it as well.

Forgot to address this. You should know this since you sell plates!
California plates:
Yellow plates - pre '63:
Black plates - started in 1963, ended 1970:
Blue Plates (6-digit) - started in 1970:
Blue Plate (adopted current format XLLLXXX, where X = number, L = letter) - ended in 1982:
White sun plate - started in 1982, ends in 1987:
White plate - starts in 1987:
White plate cursive - starts in 1993:
White plate sesquicentennial (1998-2000):
Cars usually stay with the plate for life (unless the owner switches them out or the car is sold at auction). Thus, with private party sales, the plate stays with the car not the seller.
If the plates are lost, you go down to the DMV and pick up new plates but they'll be of the new type. Thus, if someone steals your blue plates off your '83 Corolla, you'll go down to the DMV and be issued current white plates with something like 6RLLXXX (current sequence).

I still see Isuzu Ascenders from time to time.

That Honda Crossroad is truly weird, I thought that the Rover-Honda collaboration only produced rebadged Hondas. For instance, here's a Rover 416i, more well known as a Honda Integra:This is also something that most people have forgotten - a VW Taro (Toyota Hilux):
Saab 600 (Lancia Delta) was also quite the oddball, since it was sold exclusively in Sweden.

Australia produced a bumper crop of funky rebadges in the late 80s and 90s.Ford Telstar (Mazda Capella) - this was sold in many countries in Asia besides Australia.
The rest of these cars were only sold in Australia, due to misguided Government policy...
Ford Corsair (Nissan Pintara aka Bluebird)
Ford Maverick (Nissan Patrol)
Holden Apollo (Toyota Camry)
Holden Astra (Nissan Pulsa)
Holden Nova (Toyota Corolla... yes, that's right, Holden replaced rebadged Nissan Pulsa with a rebadged Corolla. The madness!)
Toyota Lexcen (Holden Commodore)

Man, we could have a whole thread of Isuzus!
![]()
Opel i-Mark, which was a rebadged Opel Kadett, which in turn was just another T-Body (Chevrolet Chevette).
In fact, the very first Isuzu was actually a rebadged Wolseley A-9, which was also the very first car to be built in Japan:

And of course, Hyundai got their start by selling the "Hyundai Ford Cortina"
